The Herrin Fire Department consists of a Full-time Fire Chief, three full-time Captains, three full-time Lieutenants, nine full-time Firefighters and 2 paid-on-call Firefighters. The full-time personnel belong to the International Association of Firefighters Union and are Local 3251. There are three shifts that work 24 hours on and 48 hours off. There is a Captain, Lieutenant, and three Firefighte

rs assigned to each shift. The HFD is an ISO Class 3 department beginning February 1, 2018. The HFD is an all-hazards department. Services provided but not limited to: fire suppression, hazardous materials, technical rescue, dive/water rescue and recovery, Unmanned Aircraft Systems (Drone), Extrication at motor vehicle accidents, Emergency Medical Responder. The HFD is part of the State of Illinois Mutual Aid Box Alarm System, Division 45. HFD houses 2 divisional assets: Western Shelter and Marine 45. Members are part of the following MABAS teams: Hazardous Materials, Technical Rescue and Dive/Sonar.

URGENT: MISSION 17 TRAVEL UPDATE

We want to provide our families and Southern Illinois community with an update regarding Mission 17.

Our return flight from Washington, D.C. has been delayed until tomorrow after the Sun Country Airlines pilot scheduled to fly our group home experienced an unexpected family emergency.

Sun Country Airlines is headquartered in Minneapolis, and despite efforts to secure another pilot, the earliest replacement crew available will not be able to get our group home tonight.

Our leadership team has explored the available alternatives, including whether another aircraft or charter option could be secured, but unfortunately there is not another viable option available tonight.

As a result, our entire Mission 17 group — 186 veterans, guardians and team members — will remain in the Washington, D.C. area overnight. We are currently working through hotel accommodations, transportation and the many logistics involved in caring for a group of this size.

Most importantly, everyone is safe.

This is an unprecedented situation for Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois. We prepare for as many contingencies as possible, but this is one of those circumstances completely outside of our control.

Our veterans and guardians have been updated on the situation and have been asked to contact their families directly.

We also ask for a little patience from our community tonight. Please avoid flooding our page, inbox and other channels with messages asking for individual updates right now. Our team is actively working through the logistics of accommodations, transportation and tomorrow’s return plan, and our immediate priority has to be taking care of the veterans and guardians traveling with us.

We will respond to messages and comments as we are able, and we will continue posting confirmed updates for everyone as soon as new information becomes available.

We know this is incredibly disappointing for the families, friends and community members who were preparing to welcome our veterans home tonight. We are disappointed too.

Tonight’s Welcome Home Celebration will not take place as originally planned.

Once tomorrow’s return flight information is confirmed, we will immediately share an updated arrival time and information regarding welcoming our veterans home.

Please rely on updates from the official Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois page rather than speculation or information shared elsewhere.

Thank you for your patience, your understanding and, most importantly, for continuing to support the veterans traveling with us on Mission 17.

We may have an unexpected extra chapter in this mission, but we are going to take care of our veterans and bring every one of them home.

Herrin Fire Department to Host MABAS Division 45 Hazardous Materials Team Training

Herrin, Illinois — September 1, 2026 — The Herrin Fire Department will host the MABAS Division 45 quarterly Hazardous Materials Team training on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at the Herrin CUSD #4 office, located at 500 N. 10th Street in Herrin.

The training is scheduled to take place from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. As part of the exercise, multiple emergency response vehicles will be operating in the area and participating in a simulated response to a hazardous materials incident.

Residents and motorists in the area may see an increased presence of fire and emergency vehicles during the training. The exercise is designed to provide emergency responders with valuable hands-on training and experience in responding to hazardous materials incidents.

The Herrin CUSD #4 office and all district schools will continue to operate in their normal capacity throughout the training. The Herrin Fire Department appreciates Herrin CUSD #4 for allowing the department and MABAS Division 45 to utilize its facilities for this important training exercise.

The public is asked to be aware of the increased emergency vehicle activity in the area and to use caution when traveling near the training site.

This afternoon, while it was 101° HFD was toned to a residential structure fire with someone inside. Upon arrival the resident was out and a general alarm was requested. The initial interior crew contained the fire to a room contents fire.

Thank you Marion Fire Department , United Medic Response, Williamson County Fire Protection District and Herrin Police Department - City of Herrin, IL (patrol and dispatch) for the assistance

HFD has members of MABAS teams, responds to local mutual aid through MABAS box cards, and has responded/deployed in and out of state for disasters....all part of MABAS. Currently, HFD, houses two assets. The Western Shelter and the division 45 double decker boat package.
