Herrin Police Department

In Memory of K-9 Bear

It is with great sadness that the Herrin Police Department announces the passing of retired K-9 Bear on June 4, 2026.

K-9 Bear faithfully served the Herrin Police Department and the citizens of our community from March 9, 2017 through August 23, 2024. Throughout his career, Bear demonstrated unwavering dedication, loyalty, and a strong work ethic while assisting officers in carrying out their duties and helping to keep our community safe.

Following his retirement from active service, Bear continued to enjoy life with his handler and family, who provided him with the same love and companionship that he had given throughout his years of service. Recently, Bear was diagnosed with leukemia and, on June 4, passed away peacefully surrounded by his handler and loved ones.

K-9 Bear was more than just a police dog—he was a trusted partner, a loyal companion, and a valued member of the Herrin Police Department family. His service, sacrifice, and devotion will never be forgotten. The impact he made on our department and our community will be felt for years to come.

We extend our deepest condolences to Bear’s handler, family, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.

Thank you, Bear, for your years of faithful service. Your watch has ended, but your legacy will live on forever.

Rest easy, K-9 Bear. You will be greatly missed.

Public Safety Notice – New Illinois E-Bike & E-Scooter Laws Effective January 1, 2027

The Herrin Police Department would like to make residents aware of significant changes to Illinois law regarding electric bicycles, electric scooters, and other motorized electric devices. These new regulations, established through Senate Bill 3484, will take effect on January 1, 2027.

We are sharing this information now to give riders, parents, and community members ample time to become familiar with the new requirements before they take effect.

Key Changes Under the New Law

🚫 Sidewalk Restrictions
To improve pedestrian safety, electric bicycles and electric scooters will no longer be permitted to operate on sidewalks except where specifically authorized by law.

🏍️ High-Powered Electric Motorcycles (E-Motos)
Any electric-powered device equipped with a motor exceeding 750 watts or capable of speeds greater than 28 mph will be classified as a motor-driven cycle rather than a bicycle. Operators will be required to have:

* A valid driver’s license or permit
* Liability insurance
* Proper registration and license plates

These devices will also be prohibited from operating in bicycle lanes and on bicycle trails.

🚲 E-Bike Age Requirements

* Riders must be at least 15 years old to operate a Class 1 or Class 2 e-bike.
* Riders must be at least 16 years old to operate a Class 3 e-bike.
* Riders under the age of 18 may not carry passengers unless the passenger is an immediate family member.

🛴 Electric Scooters and Hoverboards

* Operators must be at least 16 years old.
* These devices may only be operated on roadways with posted speed limits of 35 mph or less, unless otherwise authorized.

As electric transportation continues to grow in popularity, these regulations are intended to improve safety for riders, pedestrians, and motorists alike.

The Herrin Police Department encourages parents and riders to review these upcoming changes and begin preparing now. Additional information and educational materials will be shared as the implementation date approaches.

We appreciate the community’s cooperation and commitment to keeping Herrin’s streets, sidewalks, and public spaces safe for everyone
