A new school year also means new rules for students riding e-bikes, e-scooters, and other electric devices.

Recently, the Herriman City Police Department joined the Utah Department of Public Safety and Providence Hall Junior High to help parents and students better understand Utah’s new helmet requirements, e-bike laws, and safe riding practices.

A few important reminders:
• Riders under 21 are required to wear a helmet on electric devices when riding on public roads.
• Parents should know what type of device their child is riding and where it can legally be used.
• Proper helmets, safe speeds, and following traffic laws can make a significant difference in preventing serious injuries.

Before your student heads out, take a few minutes to check the device, check the helmet, and review the rules together.

Do you know the difference between a Standard Crosswalk and a School Crosswalk in Utah?

Help keep pedestrians in our community safe by knowing the following:

Standard Crosswalk (Two Parallel Lines)
• Drivers must yield and wait until the pedestrian has completely cleared their half of the roadway before proceeding

School Crosswalk (Yellow Sign & Zebra Striping)
• Drivers must wait until the pedestrian has cleared the ENTIRE crosswalk, from curb to curb, before proceeding
• This rule applies 24/7, 365 days a year, regardless of whether school is in session

Scam alert: someone claiming to represent the Herriman Police Department has called some residents and former residents, saying they must pay money for missing jury duty. They have managed to spoof phone numbers, meaning they make a call that appears to come from a legitimate or local phone number. This is a scam, and you should ignore the call.

If you ever receive a phone call or text that sounds fishy, find our contact information another way (such as going directly to our website), and call us to make sure. We’ll never get upset with you for double-checking before acting.

A police training will take place today, Monday, July 20th, at Mountain Ridge High School.

Large numbers of officers and HPD vehicles may be seen at the school. Please know this is a part of a training exercise and not an active situation.

Additional training at Mountain Ridge High School will take place through the end of July.

*Herriman City names Cody Stromberg as Chief of Police*

Herriman City has named Cody Stromberg as its Chief of Police following approval by the City Council at its Wednesday evening meeting. Stromberg previously served as the Herriman City Police Department’s deputy chief and interim chief following the retirement of former Chief Troy Carr.

Stromberg was one of the original four members of the Herriman City Police Department when it was formed in 2018. He has lived in Herriman for more than 25 years and has spent most of his law enforcement career serving the Herriman community.

A ceremonial swearing-in will be held at the next City Council meeting on May 27 at 7:00 p.m. at the Herriman City Hall (5355 W. Main Street).
