Experience a moving musical dialogue between Portuguese guitar and classical guitar, inspired by José Saramago’s “Viagem a Portugal,” taking you on a journey through the landscapes and traditions of Portugal’s diverse regions.

Admission is free and open to the Portuguese diaspora and all friends of Portugal.

Um dia que destaca a importância global do português como uma língua da cultura, ciência, economia e diplomacia. A língua portuguesa conecta mais de 265 milhões de pessoas, espalhadas por todos os continentes.

🇵🇹 Esta noite tivemos uma oportunidade significativa de nos reunirmos como comunidade portuguesa em Utah para celebrar o 52º aniversário do 25 de Abril de 1974, a Revolução dos Cravos. Partilhámos uma refeição bem portuguesa — com caldo verde, broa e excelente companhia — e recordámos as nossas histórias desse dia marcante, refletindo sobre como vivemos um dos momentos mais consequentes da história de Portugal.

Ao relembrar os acontecimentos daquela noite extraordinária, fomos também levados a reconhecer padrões de liberdade nas nossas próprias vidas. A democracia não é autossustentável, nem garantida após ser conquistada — exige cuidado constante, participação e vigilância. A história ensina-nos que as instituições democráticas raramente são desmanteladas de uma só vez. Mais frequentemente, deterioram-se gradualmente — através da apatia, do desinteresse, de pequenas injustiças sucessivas na lei, ou do enfraquecimento silencioso de normas e liberdades, primeiro afetando os marginalizados, e depois todos aqueles que simplesmente discordam.

O legado do 25 de Abril traz consigo uma responsabilidade. O mesmo espírito que levou o povo às ruas em 1974 deve continuar vivo nos gestos quotidianos de cidadania: manter-se informado, participar no diálogo, responsabilizar os líderes e, acima de tudo, votar.

O voto é uma das mais poderosas expressões de liberdade. É simultaneamente um direito e um dever. Cada voto é uma reafirmação de que a voz do povo importa — e de que os sacrifícios de quem veio antes de nós não foram em vão.

Esta noite, ao comemorarmos o 25 de Abril, o nosso Dia da Liberdade, homenageámos aqueles que tiveram a coragem de imaginar um Portugal diferente — e de agir para o concretizar. Mas também olhamos para o futuro, reconhecendo que a preservação da democracia está firmemente nas nossas mãos.

Que permaneçamos vigilantes, que permaneçamos envolvidos, e que nunca tomemos a liberdade como garantida.

Viva o 25 de Abril! Viva a Liberdade!

🇺🇸 Tonight we had a meaningful opportunity to gather as a Portuguese community in Utah, to celebrate the 52nd anniversary of Portugal’s 25th of April, 1971 carnation revolution. We were able to break bread together, in a very Portuguese meal that included caldo verde, broa, and amazing company. We shared some of our April 25th stories, ho we lived one of Portugal’s history most consequential days. We recounted the events that took place that amazing night, we were reminded of patterns of freedom in our lives, that democracy is not self-sustaining, not guaranteed once achieved, that it requires constant care, participation, and vigilance.

History teaches us that democratic institutions are rarely dismantled all at once. More often, they erode gradually—through apathy, disengagement, slightly unfair law, after slightly unfair law, or the quiet weakening of norms and freedoms, initially with them marginalized, eventually with those who just happen to disagree.

The legacy of April 25th carries a responsibility. The same spirit that brought people into the streets in 1974 must live on in the quieter, everyday acts of citizenship: staying informed, engaging in dialogue, holding leaders accountable, and above all, participating in elections.

Voting is one of the most powerful expressions of freedom. It is both a right and a duty. Each ballot cast is a reaffirmation that the voice of the people matters—and that the sacrifices of those who came before us were not in vain.

Tonight, as we commemorated the 25th of April, our Day of Freedom, we honored those who had the courage to imagine a different Portugal—and to act on that vision. But we also look forward, recognizing that the preservation of democracy rests squarely in our hands.

May we remain vigilant, may we remain engaged, and may we never take freedom for granted.

🇵🇹 O Utah construiu, de forma muito discreta, um dos programas mais fortes de ensino de língua portuguesa nos Estados Unidos, algo que se sentiu em pleno na Utah Portuguese Fair deste ano.

Alunos do ensino secundário de todo o estado, matriculados no program de imersão linguística, Bridge, demonstram um nível impressionante de fluência e proficiência cultural — através de pequenas peças teatrais, música, apresentações e trabalhos de investigação, o português tornou‑se claramente uma parte viva do quotidiano escolar.

Esta semana tive a honra de participar na feira e de dirigir a palavra a estes alunos fantásticos que, tal como verdadeiros atletas olímpicos, investiram anos e incontáveis horas para dominar a língua, a cultura e a história de Portugal e do mundo lusófono. Foi especialmente divertido participar como júri do concurso de “sketches” — e, para ser sincero, também bastante surpreendente. A criatividade, a confiança e a fluência natural que estes jovens demonstraram surpreenderiam qualquer pessoa que ainda pense que a aprendizagem de línguas se limita à sala de aula.

Este sucesso não é fruto do acaso. A Universidade de Utah, através do Department of World Languages and Cultures e do Brazilian Club, assumiu um papel central, oferecendo financiamento, voluntários e um palco universitário para o evento. A feira inspira‑se também numa forte herança, seguindo um modelo criado pelas históricas feiras de Espanhol e Português da BYU, que moldam concursos de línguas em Utah desde a década de 1950. Em conjunto e parceria, estas instituições estão a ajudar a construir uma tradição duradoura para a língua portuguesa no nosso estado.

O português é hoje uma das línguas mais faladas em Utah, refletindo um compromisso crescente com a aprendizagem de línguas entre os nossos alunos. Estes jovens não estão apenas a aprender uma língua — estão a construir pontes com uma comunidade global de mais de 260 milhões de falantes de português, de Portugal ao Brasil, passando por África, Ásia e muito mais além.

Uma nota de gratidão ao Dr. Blair Bateman, diretor do programa, pelo convite que me lançou para participar neste certame, e pelo University of Utah World Languages & Cultures, pelo acolhimento caloroso.

🇺🇸 Utah has quietly built one of the strongest Portuguese language learning programs in the United States, and you can feel it in full force at the Utah Portuguese Fair. High school students from across the state, enrolled in the Bridge Program, are showing an impressive level of fluency and cultural depth—through skits, music, presentations, and research, Portuguese has clearly become a living, breathing part of student life here.

This week I had the honor of participating in the fair and addressing these remarkable students, who, like true Olympians, have invested years and countless hours to master the Portuguese language, culture, and history. It was especially fun to serve as a judge for the skit competition—and honestly, a bit humbling. The creativity, confidence, and natural fluency these young people demonstrated would surprise anyone who still thinks language learning is confined to a classroom.

This success is not by chance. The University of Utah, through the Department of World Languages and Cultures and the Brazilian Club, has stepped up as a key anchor, providing funding, volunteers, and a collegiate stage for the event. The fair also draws on a strong legacy, using a framework inspired by BYU’s long‑running Spanish and Portuguese Fairs, which have shaped language competitions in Utah since the 1950s. Together, and in partnership, these institutions are helping build a lasting tradition for Portuguese in the state.

Portuguese is now among the most spoken languages in Utah, reflecting a growing commitment to language learning among our students. These young scholars are not only learning a language—they are building bridges to a global community of more than 260 million Portuguese speakers, from Portugal, to Brazil and to Africa, Asia, and beyond.
