The Morgan Grove Colored School in Desoto County, served as a connecting agent of the struggle and survival of colored students attending a one-room, one-teacher segregated schoolroom. The school served students grades 1-8 ages ranging from 6-18 in Hernando, Mississippi. Morgan Grove Church deeded one half acre of land to Desoto County Board of Education and the school community provided $150.00 for the construction of a new simple block building. It was furnished with chalkboards and used furniture: A coal burning heater, student desks of various sizes and a teacher desk. It also contained electricity and lights. The blocks were painted with white interior and exterior. There was not any landscaping, but several parents planted flowers around the entrance areas. No inside bathroom facilities were provided. This community preservation project will serve as a reminder and motivational factor that if students could achieve under those conditions they can triumph over any challenges with the presence facilities and curriculum. It is architecturally important because it was among last of building constructed with such simplicity and the only one in the area that has not been completely demolished.
