Former Southaven Police Officer Sentenced to 10 Years for Role in Car Theft Ring

HERNANDO, Miss. – A former Southaven police officer has been sentenced to the maximum penalty under Mississippi law for his role in a 2023 car theft ring that targeted vehicles across North Mississippi.

Tony Herring Jr., who once wore the badge as a Southaven Police officer, pleaded guilty in March to one count of accessory after the fact to commit auto theft — a felony offense. He was sentenced today to 10 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections. Along with the 10 years to serve, Herring Jr. will have to pay a $10,000 fine plus court costs.

Herring was indicted by a DeSoto County Grand Jury in April following an investigation into a regional auto theft operation.

Prosecutors alleged that Herring used his knowledge and position as a law enforcement officer to assist others involved in stealing vehicles and to shield them from law enforcement efforts.

“This was a serious breach of public trust,” said District Attorney Matthew Barton. “Taxpayers paid Tony Herring to enforce the law — instead, he was helping criminals break it. That betrayal didn’t just damage public confidence, it created more crime, more victims, and more costs for the very people he was sworn to protect. When an officer abuses their position like this, they deserve the full weight of the law — and that’s exactly what they got today.”

District Attorney Barton also commended the Southaven Police Department for its swift and thorough investigation. “It’s never easy to investigate one of your own, but Southaven Police did the right thing,” Barton said. “Their professionalism and commitment to justice were essential in bringing this case to a close.”

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Steven Jubera.

“This office will not hesitate to prosecute anyone who breaks the law — badge or no badge,” Barton added. “No one is above the law in DeSoto County.”

DeSoto County District Attorney’s Office Assists ICE in Deportation Efforts

HERNANDO, Miss. – The DeSoto County District Attorney’s Office assisted in a deportation operation that resulted in the detention of eight individuals who are now pending removal from the United States.

These individuals, who were believed to be illegally residing in the United States, were housed at the DeSoto County Adult Detention Center based on arrests for various criminal offenses. The operation was part of an ongoing effort to ensure that individuals who have committed a crime in the United States are held accountable and sent back to their country of origin.

The District Attorney’s Office continues to support law enforcement agencies in their efforts to maintain public safety and enforce both state and federal law. This collaboration with ICE is one of many steps taken to help address illegal immigration and criminal activity within DeSoto County.

“By working with ICE, we are protecting DeSoto County residents and relieving the taxpayers of the financial burden created by illegal immigrants,” said District Attorney Matthew Barton. "Our current state law demands local and state agencies enforce federal immigration laws, and my office is fully committed to cooperating with federal authorities to fulfill that legal obligation."

The detained individuals are now facing deportation proceedings, with ICE taking the lead in the removal process.

🚨 Captured 🚨

The District Attorney’s newly formed Intercept and Intel Task Force successfully apprehended fugitive Edwin Wilson today, in connection with an armed robbery that occurred in Olive Branch.

The task force, composed of investigators from the District Attorney’s Office and detectives from Olive Branch Police Department, and City of Hernando Police Department, worked collaboratively with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department in this case to locate and safely apprehend Wilson this afternoon.

The timely operation, supported by information-sharing protocols, allowed authorities to apprehend Wilson without incident or harm to any individuals involved. Additional charges are expected to follow as a result of the take-down.

Tell your friends: If you commit crime in DeSoto County, we will find you and we will prosecute you. DeSoto will not be your criminal playground.
