This week’s “Hermosa Highlights” include great work by not only our dedicated patrol officers but our specialized teams like detectives, traffic and CIT (Crime Impact Team).

On Monday detectives worked a residential burglary duo caught on camera that they identified and began to look for. On Tuesday CIT located the couple and arrested them (female pictured, male was not so photogenic 😂).

On Tuesday the DMV sent field investigators to work with HBPD on increased complaints regarding handicap violators (fake placards / mis-use of placards) and CIT worked targeted enforcement yielding several citations and seizures of false placards.

On Wednesday we received several 9-1-1 calls about a subject on PCH attacking vehicles with a baseball bat. He smashed a window and a side view mirror of occupied vehicles before our traffic unit located and arrested him, charging him with assault with a deadly weapon. Side note, although scary to experience as a driver, fortunately no one was injured in this incident.

On Thursday our CIT unit was on the prowl for “shenanigans” when they observed two males park a blue Hyundai in the 1600 Block of Hermosa Avenue, exit and break into another vehicle nearby, stealing property from it and fleeing the scene. Our CIT gave chase, stopped the suspects who were arrested and linked to similar crimes in Manhattan Beach.

Even as we write this (Friday night) our CIT just arrested a subject who had a valid domestic violence restraining order issued against him and, you guessed it, was violating it.

24/7/365 our patrol, traffic, detectives and CIT are here for you - honored to serve the best little beach city.

On this Memorial Day Weekend, we honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. 🇺🇸 The Hermosa Beach Police Department reminds everyone to drive safe and never drink and drive. Include a sober driver or ride share in your plans for the holiday weekend.

Safety on our roadways also includes buckling up and securing children in the right car seats. With increased crowds and vehicles on the roadway comes increased traffic collisions. Hermosa Beach PD will continue to enforce traffic violations on our roadways throughout the busy weekend. This year’s Click It or Ticket campaign runs from May 18 to 31. We will have additional officers on patrol actively looking for traffic violations including drivers and passengers who are not wearing seat belts.

“Our priority is protecting the people in our community. Wearing a seat belt or properly securing children in car seats or a booster seat gives everyone a better chance of surviving a crash,” HbPD Sgt. Dadigan said. “We want every trip – short or long – to end safely, so please buckle up, slow down, and drive safe.”

Parents and caregivers are also encouraged to keep children in the proper rear or forward-facing seat as long as possible and use the “Five-Step Test” to determine if their child is big enough to safely use a seat belt without a booster seat.

The Hermosa Beach Police Department will be actively looking for unsafe and dangerous drivers. Don’t end up in the Hb Jail! Funding for Click It or Ticket enforcement is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

We recently celebrated two of Hermosa’s Finest, Officers Jones and Pineda, who were awarded life saving awards for a call we posted about back on Thanksgiving 2025. They responded to a subject who was down and unresponsive and administered CPR and used one of our newly issued AED’s, shocking the victim into a normal cardiac rhythm who eventually regained his own breathing. Great job Officers Jones and Pineda! It’s never too late to sign up for a CPR / first aid class. You could be the reason someone is alive today!

Recently, an individual experiencing homelessness approached officers and asked for help. Working in collaboration with HERO, the City’s homeless outreach team, the officers requested the assistance of CIT (HBPD’s crime impact team). CIT supplements patrol so while officers are tied up handling calls for service CIT is able to proactively deal with specific issues in Hermosa. HERO was able to find housing accommodations in Los Angeles for the individual and CIT assisted in relocating the subject so that he could have a better living situation. CIT works hard to proactively address issues in our community.

🚲May is National Bicycle Safety Month🚲

From children riding to school to adults staying active and healthy, biking is both a pastime and a mode of transportation for thousands of Californians. May is National Bicycle Safety Month and the Hermosa Beach PD is urging everyone to be alert to keep our community safe.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 1,166 people killed while riding a bike on U.S. roads in 2023, and an estimated 49,489 bicyclists were injured. In California, there were 145 bicyclists killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2023.

“People of all ages use both bicycles and e-bikes to ride to school, work, and other activities,” said Sgt. Keaton Dadigan. Bikes, like all road users, have the right to safe streets. We encourage drivers and bicyclists to look out for one another and practice safe habits so we may all go safely.”

To help keep people biking or walking safe, Hermosa Beach PD will continue conduct traffic safety operations throughout the month specifically focused on driver behaviors that put bicyclists and pedestrians at risk, such as speeding, making illegal turns, failure to yield right of way and stop sign/red light running. So far this month, HBPD has also issued numerous citations to bike/ebike riders that put pedestrian’s safety at risk in The Strand “Walk Only” zones (pictured).

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the NHTSA National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
