Hermantown Police Department’s K9 Bruno has received donation of body armor

Hermantown Police Department, MN - K9 Bruno has received a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Bruno’s vest was sponsored by Bill Karpuk of Plating Specialties, Madison Heights, MI and embroidered with the sentiment “Gifted by Plating Specialties- Madison Heights, MI”.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. This potentially lifesaving body armor for four-legged K9 officers is U.S. made, custom fitted, and National Institute of Justice (NIJ) certified. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 6,513 vests valued at $6.9 million to K9s in all 50 states, made possible by both private and corporate donations.

The Hermantown Police Department would like to take a moment to honor and remember the officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Their courage, service and legacy will never be forgotten. May 15 is Peace Officers Memorial Day. You will see flags flown at half-staff in their honor.

We proudly recognize the officers serving our community each day. We are grateful that they serve with honesty, professionalism and dedication. Their commitment to keeping our community safe does not go unnoticed.

We extend our appreciation to all other law enforcement agencies, but send a special thanks to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, Duluth Police Department and Proctor Police Department. Thank you for all that you do!

Heads up, drivers: Minnesota law on stopping for school buses has changed. You must now stop at least 20 feet from the bus whenever the red lights are flashing. The stop arm does NOT have to be extended. This update closes the loophole where drivers previously may have tried to “beat the arm” when passing the bus — a risky move that puts children in danger.

Slowing down and adding that extra caution will help make sure every child can travel to and from school safely.

The first violation carries a $500 fine.

🚨- Hermantown Arrests - 🚨

On Tuesday evening, Hermantown Officers were dispatched to a local business for a report of a vehicle’s tire being slashed. Through the help of the public and the business, officers were able to obtain a plate of the suspect vehicle.

A short time later, the suspect vehicle was found and officers located three individuals in it. While speaking with them, a male admitted to slashing the tire. K9 Bruno was ultimately deployed to conduct a vehicle sniff and alerted to the presence of narcotics. A vehicle search yielded a felony amount of controlled substances.

The male was arrested for Criminal Damage to Property and 5th Degree Possession. A second individual was arrested for 5th Degree Possession. The third person from the vehicle was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

Great work to all involved, including the members of the public who saw the incident unfold and provided officers with information that assisted in the investigation!

🚨 HERMANTOWN ARREST: Gun Seized! 🚨

Around 5:00 PM today, an alert HPD officer spotted a 20-year-old male with active warrants entering a local retail store.

Officer went in, confirmed ID, and placed him under arrest.

Suspect resisted and tried to get away and flee—but was quickly taken into custody.

Search turned up a handgun (individually manufactured, no serial number—commonly referred to as a ghost gun).

Charges:
- Illegal carrying of a handgun
- Obstruction / resisting arrest
- Active warrants

Great work by our Officer putting himself in a dangerous situation—another dangerous weapon off the streets and out of our community.
