August 22, 1863 - The Hermanner Volksblatt paper reports on increasing threats and violence from Confederate “Bushwackers” in the area of targeting Germans. German support for the Union, and often for emancipation, made them frequent targets of such attacks. The Volksblatt laid much of the blame for the situation at the feet of the state government, which it accused of not doing enough to protect loyal Unionists.

Today we celebrate National Bratwurst Day, a sausage with centuries of tradition that’s traveled far from its German roots. Whether grilled in a backyard or served with sauerkraut in a Hermann restaurant, bratwurst is more than a meal, it’s a cultural connection. Did you know bratwurst dates back to 14th-century Germany, with over 40 regional varieties? German immigrants brought their delicious recipes to Missouri in the 1800s, and the rest is history. Taste a piece of the past today at any Hermann location. The Wurst Haus, Vintage 1847 at Stonehill Winery or Tin Mill Brewery…all serve the specialty!

August 10, 1861-

The Hermanner Volksblatt (Hermann People’s Paper) reports on the training of the Hermann Home Guard.

Home Guard Units sprang up early in the Civil War as quick-response militia supporting the Union. Such groups played an important role in securing parts of Missouri at the war’s opening.

The paper complained however, that the Hermann Guard were tired of their “monotonous service” guarding the local railroad bridges.

Today we celebrate the state of Missouri’s 204th birthday. Joining the Union on August 10, 1821, Missouri was a relatively unpopulated land. The frontier state invited all sorts of immigrants, including one Gottfried Duden, who arrived in 1824 and truly wrote the book on immigrating to Missouri. His book inspired thousands to travel to our state of new horizons, and there is a good chance that if you have German ancestry and live in Missouri, you have Duden to thank.

Looking for a festival to attend in Germany during August?

June 1917-

Four young men from Hermann enlist in the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) to serve in WW1. They were: Milton Blust, Irwin Ochsner, Phillipp Wohlt and Harold Friend.

Despite its German roots and early misgivings about the possibility of war with the German Empire, many Hermannites chose to fight for the US during the conflict.
