Thank you St. Joseph School for inviting us out to Back to School Night last night to share all about the library. We had so much fun meeting new folks, seeing familiar faces, and giving away library goodies to parents and students alike. We hope to see you all at the library soon!

One of the joys of library work is getting to know folks in our community, like Narissa Harris, LMFT, , who has a passion for helping others. We've watched Narissa bring her two beautiful daughters to Hercules Library, and started talking about what she does in her professional life: bring awareness to issues affecting the Black community, with a specialty in Black maternal and infant health.

Hundreds of women in the US die during pregnancy or during the year after. Black women are THREE TIMES MORE LIKELY to die from a pregnancy-related cause than White women. There are lots of reasons why - finding quality healthcare, underlying chronic conditions, social issues preventing Black women from having fair opportunities for economic, physical, and emotional health. But it doesn't have to be this way.

So we're going to talk about it. This Saturday, 3pm at Hercules Library, Narissa will talk about the issues, options for healthcare, avenues for support. We'll also have representatives from Contra Costa's Black Infant Health group, as well as Planned Parenthood, all providing more resources and information for all moms, and those considering the journey.

Everyone is welcome. Please join us.

Join fellow readers on the second Thursday of the month from 6:30-7:30 p.m. for thoughtful discussion and a closer look at the month's read. All adults are welcome. No books were harmed (or dog-eared) in the making of this book club-just plenty of pages turned and conversations shared.

Next month, September 10th, we will be discussing "The Correspondent" by Virginia Evans.
Copies will be available at the front desk starting August 13.
