Why We Use Riprap in Areas That Frequently Wash Out

Many residents ask why you’ll sometimes see our crews placing large rock, known as riprap, in ditches, around culverts, or along road embankments after heavy rains.

Riprap is one of the most effective ways to protect our road infrastructure from erosion. During periods of heavy rainfall, fast-moving water can wash away soil, undercut roads, damage culverts, and create unsafe conditions. The large rock helps by:

* Reducing erosion by slowing the speed of moving water.
* Protecting culverts and drainage structures from being undermined or washed out.
* Stabilizing ditch banks and road shoulders, helping prevent the loss of supporting soil.
* Directing water through the drainage system instead of allowing it to carve new channels.
* Extending the life of the roadway, reducing the need for costly emergency repairs after every major rain event.

While riprap may not always look as smooth or neat as freshly graded soil, it serves an important purpose. It is a long-term investment that strengthens our infrastructure and helps keep roads open and safe during future storms.

Our goal is not only to repair damage after a storm but also to make these problem areas more resilient so they can better withstand future flooding.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we continue working to improve and protect the roads throughout Okmulgee County District 3.

Good Morning from Okmulgee County District 3!

Rise and shine! Our crews will be out throughout the day assessing roads that were impacted by yesterday’s flooding, as well as monitoring areas that have the potential to flood today.

As water continues to recede from creeks and fields into the rivers, roads located near river crossings and low-lying areas may experience rising water throughout the day. We will continue to monitor conditions closely and respond as needed.

Our priority is to address any immediate safety concerns and make necessary repairs as quickly as conditions safely allow. We appreciate your patience and ask everyone to use caution when traveling. If you encounter high water, please remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

Thank you for your continued support as our crews work to keep the roads safe for everyone.

Our crews worked diligently to repair the washout and restore safe access as quickly as possible. We appreciate everyone’s patience, understanding, and cooperation while the road was closed.

Although the road is open, we ask motorists to continue using caution while traveling through the area as crews may return to complete additional finishing work if needed.
