MEMORIAL DAY CLOSURE | In 1966, Yale University and Pulitzer Prize-winner historian David W. Blight stumbled across a little known narrative inside boxes of Union veteran archives at Harvard University.

On May 1, 1865; less than a month after the end of the Civil War, a crowd of about 10,000 freed slaves staged a parade around a Charleston, SC race track to honor fallen soldiers and prisoners of war.

By 1866, a group of war widows had also gathered in Georgia. Together they covered the graves of Confederate and Union fallen in mounds of fresh flowers.

These acts of remembering and reconciliation captured the heart of a sorely divided nation. 'Decoration Day' as it was then called, rapidly spread. In 1971, the tradition became formally recognized as a federal holiday.

From recognizing fallen Civil War soldiers, its' scope has broadened to include American military personnel who died in all wars; including World War I and II, The Vietnam War, The Korean War and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

On [Monday, May 25] City Hall and Facilities will be closed in solemn remembrance of the valiant men and women of the American Armed Forces who've sacrificed their lives in battle.

1 MILLION DOLLAR PRIZE POOL FOR SMALL BUSINESSES | For 250 years, small businesses have powered innovation, created opportunity, and strengthened local communities. Small businesses build America and the US Small Business Administration is honoring that legacy while investing in the next generation of builders, makers, and job creators.

Selected businesses will be invited to participate in a live pitch competition in Washington, DC, which will culminate in a $1 million prize pool.

Submissions will be evaluated by looking at how each business performs in the following categories:

▪ Strengthening American competitiveness
▪ Small business “punching above its weight”
▪ Economic impact and quality jobs
▪ Business fundamentals and ex*****on readiness

The top 10 semifinalists will be announced the week of July 4, 2026, during the Great American State Fair.
