America 250 Banners are being displayed starting on Garnett Street. Thank you to Tem Blackburn for all his hard work in research and development of these beautiful and informative tributes to America’s history, and to the America 250 Board.

As part of the City of Henderson’s observance of Black History Month, banners have been deployed in the central business district on Garnett Street and Breckenridge Street featuring the paintings of local Black folk artist Ruth Russell Williams (1932-2010) documenting life in the Black community in Vance County during her lifetime. Mrs. Williams established and operated Ruth’s Beauty World on Montgomery Street and later in life discovered her talents as an artist. Her paintings have been featured on the cover of Smithsonian Associates Magazine, on national television and in an exhibition of her paintings at the North Carolina Central University Museum of Art. We know you will enjoy the vibrant colors and joyful subjects of her paintings which will be displayed through March and April.
