I am very excited to announce that I have been elected as the new Mayor of Hempstead.
I am grateful for the opportunity to serve our community.
I want to send a huge thank you to everyone that supported me throughout the campaign. I also want to acknowledge Erica Gillum for running a very spirited race.
Let’s put aside our differences and focus on what unites us as we moves our city forward.

I am uniquely qualified to be Mayor of Hempstead, Texas as I have served as a City Council Member for 12 years. During my working tenure with our City, I successfully managed several Departments to include Economic Development (Office Manager, President of EDC Board, and Interim Director); Parks and Recreation Department (Director); Maintenance Department (Supervisor) and Cemetery Department (Supervisor), oversaw budgets for all departments. Currently I am employed with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice as a Program Specialists overseeing Maintenance, Planning an operation for various areas. I retired with 10 years of service from TDCJ, 8 years as a Sergeant of Correctional Officer and 2 years as an officer.

My name is Katherine Ragston Ward, and I am running for Mayor of our City of Hempstead, Texas.

I am a proud lifelong resident where I view city government as by and for our citizens. I also feel that city operations must be entirely transparent so that all citizens can participate and be represented equally.

I am uniquely qualified to be Mayor of Hempstead, Texas as I have served as a City Council Member for 12 years. During my working tenure with our City, I successfully managed several Departments to include Economic Development (Office Manager, President of EDC Board, and Interim Director); Parks and Recreation Department (Director); Maintenance Department (Supervisor) and Cemetery Department (Supervisor), oversaw budgets for all departments. Currently I am employed with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice as a Program Specialists overseeing Maintenance, Planning an operation for various areas. My Educational background includes a High School Diploma from Hempstead High; a Bachelors (Industrial Education) and Masters of Education (Education) from Prairie View A & M University.

Hempstead is a city I’ve been a part of my entire life, I want to see a change just like all citizens want and need, Honesty, Trust, Transparency, Less spending, and more togetherness as a team. I’m respectfully asking for your SUPPORT AND VOTE for this change and to improve the city image and to plan for the growth we will face for many years to come.
