Healthy rangelands help support healthy watersheds.

The deep roots of native grasses and shrubs slow runoff, improve water infiltration, reduce erosion, and help filter water before it reaches streams and rivers. These natural processes contribute to cleaner water, healthier aquatic ecosystems, and more resilient landscapes across Montana.

Conservation efforts that protect and improve rangelands also help protect one of our most valuable resources, water.

NRCS encourages farmers, ranchers, and foresters to connect with their local field office now to create or update a conservation plan while on-site visits and resource assessments can take place during the growing season.

June is 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗥𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵!

Did you know that nearly 70% of Montana (approximately 68 million acres) is rangeland?

These working landscapes do far more than support livestock production. Healthy rangelands help collect, filter, and store water, provide wildlife habitat, reduce erosion, and support the health of Montana's watersheds and communities.

Throughout June, MACD is celebrating Montana Rangeland Appreciation Month and the important role rangelands play in conserving our natural resources and sustaining our way of life.
