Throughout history, many influential figures have quietly struggled with mental health challenges. This series highlights well-known individuals whose experiences remind us that mental health has always been part of the human story.

Michelangelo

Michelangelo, one of the greatest artists of the Renaissance, created masterpieces like the Sistine Chapel and the statue of David. But behind his artistic genius, he experienced periods of deep isolation and emotional struggle.

He was known to withdraw from others, struggle with intense pressure, and experience bouts of depression throughout his life.
His story reminds us that even those who create beauty and inspiration for the world can face personal challenges behind the scenes.

Head over to our website to read the full story and learn more about Michelangelo’s journey.

An update from our Executive Director, Matt K***z:

Today we have something worth celebrating.

Montana has been selected as one of just ten states in the nation to receive federal funding through the Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic Medicaid Demonstration Program.

This is a major step forward for behavioral health care in our state. The CCBHC model will help establish clinics that serve Montanans seeking care for mental health or substance use challenges, regardless of age, location, or ability to pay.

For NAMI Montana, this moment is the result of nearly a decade of advocacy, partnership, and persistent work to help rebuild a stronger, more sustainable public mental health system.

We are deeply grateful to the leaders, partners, advocates, families, and supporters who helped make this possible. This is an important win for Montana, and there is still work ahead as these clinics move toward implementation.

John Nash

John Nash was a brilliant mathematician whose work reshaped modern economics and earned him a Nobel Prize. But behind his achievements, Nash lived with schizophrenia for many years.

He experienced delusions and periods of disconnection from reality that deeply impacted both his personal and professional life. Despite these challenges, Nash eventually returned to academic work and continued contributing to his field.

His story reminds us that recovery is possible and that mental health challenges do not define a person’s potential.
