It’s been a big year for doulas in Montana!

This week marks one year since the Governor signed SB 319 into law. Since then, doulas, advocates, policymakers, and partners across the state have continued working to strengthen and advance doula care for Montana families.

You can read more about the movement to advance doula work across Montana today on the HMHB blog.

We also want to invite doulas and birth workers to join us for Doula Day on June 22 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Billings, Montana. This day of collaboration and learning will bring together doulas from across the state for:
• Updates from policymakers and advocates
• Training to help grow and strengthen your doula business
• Support and guidance around doula licensure

This Mother’s Day, as we honor moms and all the many ways motherhood shows up in our lives, we also want to recognize that May is Maternal Mental Health Month.

Motherhood can be joyful, loving, and deeply meaningful - but it can also be messy, overwhelming, and hard. One in five pregnant or postpartum people experiences a diagnosed mood or anxiety disorder, making depression the most common complication related to childbearing. These perinatal mental health conditions can impact the health and wellbeing of parents, infants, and entire families.

By investing in training and workforce development, we can better support Montana moms and babies, helping ensure the strongest possible start for our youngest residents.

Happy Mother’s Day, and if you’d like to learn more about how to support moms and maternal mental health in Montana, visit hmhb-mt.org.

Today on the HMHB Blog...

HMHB Storytelling Coordinator Gwyneth Hyndman shares reflections on how Mother’s Day will feel different this year following the loss of her mother. In her words:

“May this Sunday be the port you need. One of rest, grace, reflection, heavy blankets, birdsong, forgiveness, strong coffee with real cream, sunlight on your eyelids, and if you need it, an Olympic-sized pool to swim through.”

Thank you, Gwyneth, for your tender and beautiful reflection. As Mother’s Day weekend approaches, we’re holding space for the many emotions this day can carry. We wish you gentleness and care this weekend, whatever Mother’s Day means for you.
