Today, Helena Public Schools pauses to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost 25 years ago; however they are always in our hearts. We also recognize and honor the incredible courage of first responders, service members, and the everyday heroes who showed complete selflessness and bravery on that solemn day.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Helena Police Department September 10th, 2026

Police Investigate Reported Active Shooter Incident, Determine No Threat Existed

Today, at approximately 0938hrs, officers responded to the 1400 block of N. Montana Avenue following a report of possible gunshots and an active shooter situation.

While officers were en route, School Resource Officers (SROs) immediately notified nearby schools of the reported incident, resulting in precautionary lockdowns/shelter in place being initiated to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Upon arriving on scene and conducting an initial investigation, officers quickly determined that no shooting had occurred and that the situation was the result of a misunderstanding. There was no active threat to the public, students, or school personnel.

Once the situation was confirmed to be unfounded, schools were promptly notified and the lockdowns/shelter in place were lifted.
From the time officers received the initial call to the notification that schools could resume normal operations, approximately 10 minutes elapsed.

We appreciate the cooperation of our school partners, students, staff, and community members. While this incident was ultimately determined to be a misunderstanding, the rapid response by law enforcement and school officials demonstrates our shared commitment to public safety and the protection of our schools.

It was everyone's favorite day: Loot for Learning Day! Our amazing PTO gifted our staff with some cash to help support our students. Staff members will use these funds to provide needed materials for lessons, activities, and fun. Our staff always end up spending their own money on their students, so this gift is always appreciated. Thank you Warren PTO! 💰📚✏️💵

As a lasting gift to the Helena School District, Central Elementary School, and the greater Helena community, we invite you to join us on September 15 at 4:30 p.m. at Central Elementary for the dedication of the Klint Fisher Memorial.

This new outdoor space honors Klint’s lifelong commitment to creating schools where every student feels safe, supported, and included. More than a place of remembrance, it reflects his belief that thoughtful design can transform lives, and that every child deserves a welcoming, accessible place to learn, grow, and thrive.

We welcome students, educators, families, friends, and community members to gather with us as we celebrate Klint’s life and the enduring impact of his work across Montana.

You can help bring this meaningful space to life by contributing to our GoFundMe campaign. Together, we can create a lasting tribute that will inspire generations to come. Please help to make this possible: https://buff.ly/Ep1ONt2
