The Friends of East Point Lighthouse sharing photos, history, events and news about the East Point Lighthouse in Cumberland County, southern New Jersey on the Delaware Bay. This remote lighthouse is surrounded by natural beauty and has played an important part in the maritime history of the region. Originally known as the Maurice River Lighthouse, it was erected in 1849 by the United States Lighth

ouse Establishment. The present name was initiated in 1913. Throughout the years it's guiding light has shown fisherman, oystermen & recreational boaters the way into the mouth of the Maurice River. During daylight hours, it's bright red roof has been used through the years as a landmark by hunters, trappers & surveyors. At night it's blinking red light guides mariners on the Delaware Bay. Although numerous lighthouses once stood along the edge of the Delaware Bay, East Point is the last one remaining on the New Jersey side. In fact, it is the second oldest lighthouse still standing in New Jersey. Second only to Sandy Hook Lighthouse that was built in 1764. East Point Lighthouse is an active navigational aid with a flashing red light maintained by the US Coast Guard. The lantern room offers a panoramic view of the surrounding land and water making it a favorite subject for photographers & artists alike. The remote location, natural beauty & wildlife are a favorite for bird watchers as well. This page is managed by Nancy Patterson on behalf of East Point Lighthouse

Here's some New Jersey history ...

New Jersey was previously split in half between east and west from 1674 to 1702. The English established a proprietary colony of New Jersey for his brother James the Duke of York to run in 1664. The Duke gave power in New Jersey to Sir John Berkeley (1602-1678) and Sir George Carteret (1610-1680). This divided New Jersey in half, as Berkeley took West New Jersey, and then sold the land to John Fenwick in trust for Edward Byllynge. The Duke of York refused to transfer governing capabilities over to Quakers, which led to disputes between Fenwick and Byllynge.
During the period of West New Jersey, from 1674 to 1702, colonists organized themselves similar to their Lenape neighbors. They situated themselves into communities that were governed by local officials that were affiliated with other local communities. A central government was unimaginable due to the organic federal reality of the colony, because there would be too much distance between the central government and the small dispersed communities. Eventually, the colonies of West New Jersey and East New Jersey were dissolved in 1702 when the proprietors relinquished their rights to the English Crown.
