A familiar visitor at Evans Park🪹
If you are spending time at Evans Park, you may notice a very loud little guest making its presence known, a killdeer!
They are usually spotted near the Lakewood Youth Baseball fields, but this year we have one set up home at the playground. If you hear quick, repetitive chirping or see a bird acting a bit dramatic to get your attention, that is just the killdeer trying to lead you away from its nest.
These birds are ground nesters and are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. It is illegal to destroy or relocate an active nest without express permits from federal wildlife authorities. So our Public Works team has marked their nest at the playground to ensure we can give them plenty of space while they raise their young!
Thank you for helping us share the park with our migrating friends and remember to use caution while playing at the playground! 💙🚧
