Wild Wednesday: Great Basin Gopher Snake

This large, non-venomous snake can be recognized by its dark blotchy markings and lighter yellowish coloring. Gopher snakes are mostly active during the day and often spend time hiding in burrows, under rocks, or in crevices.

They are excellent hunters that help control rodent populations by feeding on small mammals, birds, eggs, lizards, and even other snakes—including the occasional rattlesnake. They capture prey by constricting it.

Great Basin Gopher Snakes also play an important role in the food chain, serving as prey for birds of prey, coyotes, foxes, and kingsnakes. Females can lay anywhere from 2–20 eggs in a clutch.

If you spot one on the trail, remember—they are harmless to humans and beneficial to our ecosystem!

Wild Wednesday: Honey Bees

These tiny pollinators play a huge role in our world! Honey bees help grow many of the fruits, vegetables, and nuts we enjoy every day while also supporting healthy ecosystems and wildlife habitats.

A single bee may visit thousands of flowers in one day, helping plants thrive and keeping nature in balance. Without pollinators like honey bees, our food supply and ecosystems would look very different.

Wasatch Mountain State Park community, Midway needs your help creating something meaningful for our America250 celebration!

They are building a community mosaic mural made up of 950 hand-painted tiles created by members of the community. The mural will be unveiled this summer as a lasting reminder of what we can accomplish together.
