He was a boy from Indianapolis, Indiana, who once dreamed of becoming a priest. Instead, at just 18 years old, he traded that path for a soldier's life, enlisting in the United States Army in 1966.

He served a year in Vietnam. He carried that service quietly for the rest of his life, never seeking recognition, only ever seeking to serve. Over the next three decades, he rose through the ranks in Germany, Korea, and across America, building a reputation as a man who never stopped fighting for the soldiers under his command.

By the year 2000, he had become a Lieutenant General, the U.S. Army's Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel. He carried the weight of every soldier's welfare on his shoulders, and he carried it with honor.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, he was sitting in a meeting inside the Pentagon. He had no warning. He had no chance. American Airlines Flight 77 tore through the building, and in an instant, one of the finest men in American military history was gone.

He became the highest ranking U.S. military officer ki*led that day, the most senior Army officer lost to enemy action since World War II.

He left behind his wife, Teri, and his two daughters. He now rests at Arlington National Cemetery, among the heroes he spent his life defending.

Rest in Peace, Lieutenant General Timothy J. Maude. Forgotten by too many. Never by us

Twice the honor.

When you sponsor a Patriot Pair, one wreath will be placed on a veteran's headstone at a participation WAA location this December, and a second wreath will be sent to the address of your choice to be displayed as you choose.

It is a great option if you're looking to participate on National Wreaths Across America Day and remember the service of a veteran in your family, honor the sacrifice of a military family you know, or teach others about the Wreaths Across America mission at a business or at home.

Learn more and order your Patriot Pairs today!
