During the month of August, the 2026 Fire Line Officers were officially sworn in during the monthly Hazle Township meeting. We are proud to recognize these members who have stepped forward to take on leadership roles and continue serving our community.

We were also honored to attend the swearing-in ceremony of two of our members who were hired as firefighters with the Hazleton City Fire Department. We are extremely proud of their accomplishments and wish them continued success as they begin this next chapter in their firefighting careers.

August was also a difficult month for our company as we said goodbye to our fellow brother and friend, William “Billy” Gallagher. Billy's dedication, friendship, and service will never be forgotten. His legacy will continue to live on through the many lives he touched and through the Hazle Township Fire & Rescue Company, and Township he proudly served.

***OVERNIGHT CRASH INVOLVING TRAIN***

On 09/03/26 at 0256, Hazle Township companies were dispatched to the 1000 block of South Church Street for a crash with injuries and entrapment. Additional information received reported a vehicle underneath a train with the driver trapped. Upon arrival crews found an SUV into a train with the driver self-extricated with minor injuries. A portion of the train was derailed and traffic was detoured for several hours for clean-up. Chief 2 (Zoshak) held the command.

**TRAINING ANNOUNCEMENT**

The Hazleton City Fire Department in conjunction with Hazle Township Fire & Rescue are hosting Beyond Sidewalk Supervision by Deputy Chief Floyd Wise.

The class is FREE and will be held Saturday September 26th, 2026 starting at 8:00am at the Hazleton Area High School.

Today, we laid our fellow brother and friend, William “Billy” Gallagher, to rest.

Billy’s memory will live on through the many lives he touched, the friendships he made, and the lasting legacy he leaves behind with the Hazle Township Fire & Rescue Company and throughout our community.

Today was a difficult day, but it was also a day to honor and celebrate the life of a man who meant so much to so many. We are grateful to everyone who came together to ensure Billy was given the respect, dignity, and honor he deserved.

It is with great sadness that the Hazle Township Fire & Rescue Company announces the death of William “Billy” Gallagher. Billy was a member of Hazle Township Volunteer Fire & Rescue Fire Company since April 2008 serving as Board of Director since 2011 and served as an Apparatus Operator. He was Hazle Twp Supervisor from 2006 to 2018 for two terms.

Billy was a great asset within the Fire Company and will be deeply missed for his endless dedication towards improving our Company and the Community.

The officers and members of Hazle Township Fire & Rescue would like to extend our congratulations to Firefighters Quinn Evans and John Elchisak. Both were sworn in earlier today at Hazleton City Hall as full-time firefighters with the Hazleton Fire Department. Congratulations to you both—we are proud of your accomplishment.

We take great pride in the culture at Hazle Township, which continues to guide and prepare our members for careers in public safety.

Earlier this week, at the August Hazle Township Board of Supervisors meeting, the newly elected chief officers took their oath of office, administered by Magisterial District Judge James Dixon.

During the meeting, Deputy Chief Zoshak presented an Award of Valor to David and Nicole Shema for their actions in July 2025, which resulted in the rescue of a 4-year-old autistic child from a swimming pool.

An Award of Service was also presented to Firefighter Jason Bridge in recognition of his nearly 30 years of dedicated service to the company. Jason spent close to 20 of those years in leadership roles and played a significant part in advancing the department to where it is today.

Both awards were presented on behalf of the officers and members of Hazle Township Fire & Rescue, along with the Hazle Township Board of Supervisors: Anthony Griguoli, Robert Fiume, and James Montone.

***TRUCK COMPANIES RUN WORKING FIRE IN WEST HAZLETON BOROUGH***

On 08/04/26 at 1641 hours, Tower 7 and Ladder 5 responded at the request of West Hazleton Chief to 112 E. Green St. for a house on fire. Initial crews arrived to find a working fire on the first floor with reports of occupants trapped on the third floor. Tower 7 arrived as the 1st due truck and sent its crew to division 3 for searches. All searches were negative and the fire was held to the room of origin. Hazle Twp. companies assisted with opening up and ventilation before being put inservice by command.
