Hazard Fire Department We are a combination paid/volunteer fire department which was organized in 1913.

We operate out of two stations covering the city limits and provide automatic and mutual aid to volunteer departments surrounding our coverage area.

We are proud to announce that the Hazard Fire Department, and the HFD Technical Rescue Team has been awarded the Higgins and Langley Memorial Award for Swiftwater and Flood Rescue, for our efforts during the 2025 flooding and continuing training in swift water and technical rescue disciplines.

This award is internationally recognized by the technical rescue community, and honors the lives and legacies of two California rescue men who lost their lives in separate incidents while trying to save others. Earl Higgins, a freelance filmmaker and author was swept away by flood water after successfully entering swift water and rescuing a 10 year old boy, making the ultimate sacrifice to save another. Jeff Langley, FF/Medic with LAFD lost his life when he fell approx. 70 feet into a canyon from his helicopters skid, after successfully saving a hiker who fell 150 feet.

Lieutenant’s Joshua Smith, and Jarred Smith compiled and submitted data, training records, media coverage and personal photos, as well as telling stories from the 2025 floods. While speaking to one of the organizations members, Lieutenant Joshua Smith was made aware that not only was HFD a unanimous YES across the board during voting, but was also the fastest vote of yes throughout the whole process.

“This award means a lot to me, because it is a testament to the ongoing training and the culture of our department with striving so much to get better every day. I believe we won this award because we saw where we were weak in 2022, and trained hard to get better in those areas making 2025 a more successful response. To me, this award is for all these young guys that have came in to the department the past couple of years and have trained hard, taken time away from their families, and worked to be the best that they can be to catch up to the rest of us.” - Lieutenant Joshua Smith.

“This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication that has gone into our water rescue program. I’ve had the privilege of seeing it grow from the very beginning to where it is today. Hazard and the surrounding communities are truly blessed to have a group that genuinely cares about the service it provides. Members of your Hazard Fire Department are currently out in your neighborhoods testing fire hydrants. This is an important testing period that ensures operability of fire hydrants in your area and collects important data that assists with ISO (Insurance Services Office). We do not repair the hydrants, only test them. Please give HFD members room to work. Be aware that traffic delays are a possibility and we apologize for any inconvenience. Thank you.

HIGHWAY CLOSURE
KY HW 80 East is currently shut down, both directions of travel due to a head on collision at the Bulan/Hiner exit. Not much information is available at this time other than Air Evac med flight has been requested and multiple patients are in critical condition. PLEASE seek an alternate route of travel if going East or West on 80.

HIGHWAY CLOSURE • FOURSEAM BUFFALO RD

Please take notice that Hazard Fire Department is currently on scene of a main gas line break around the 1700 block of FOURSEAM BUFFALO ROAD/KY HW 1096. The entire road is shut down approximately around Knight Ln so please seek an alternate route. We will update when the road reopens.

********ANNOUNCEMENT********

The Hazard Fire Department will be conducting its bi-annual fire hydrant testing throughout the city limits, Christopher, Wabaco, Airport Gardens, Combs, Bonnyman, and Typo beginning Monday, June 22nd and will continue through Friday, July 10th.
This testing is a vital part of keeping our water lines flushed and for insurance rating requirements. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Hazard Fire Department was dispatched to 1 Community College Drive, HCTC - Jolly building in response to a report of heavy smoke in the building. Engine 1, Ladder 2, Engine 3 and Rescue 2 respond to the scene.

On-scene HFD Fire Captain assisted with evacuations and scene control. Reportedly, electrical wiring arced off as a technician was performing maintenance inside the building causing him to fall from a ladder, and create heavy smoke related to the electrical wiring and components. HFD cleared the building, ventilated all of the smoke out and assessed the scene while Perry County EMS tended to the patient.

At this time there is no threat of fire or smoke at the college and the scene has been turned over to HCTC maintenance supervisors.

Monday June 01, just after noon, the Hazard Fire Department was requested VIA mutual aid from Grapevine Chavies VFD to respond to a working structure fire on Condy Lane. First arriving units advised a fully involved structure fire, Engine 3 and Tanker 2 were dispatched to the scene, and upon arrival determined that interior conditions were favorable for an interior fire attack.

Nozzle teams were deployed to the interior of the structure and within minutes brought the fire under control, eventually extinguishing the blaze. Search units performed a sweeping search of the structure finding animals which were rescued from the fire, but unfortunately succumbed to the smoke despite efforts to revive them by on scene fire personnel.

No injuries were reported from the scene.

Yesterday morning at approximately 07:40 AM, Hazard Fire Department received a call from the New Beginnings daycare facility off Ms. Edna Ln in reference to a possible smell of gas inside the building. Station 2 units immediately respond to the scene and upon arrival note a strong smell of gas, and received alarms on gas detectors as they entered the building.

Initial investigation lead to a malfunctioning pilot on kitchen appliances, so the appliance was immediately shut off, and a request for Hazard Gas Company was made. Units also discovered HVAC systems were circulating gas throughout the facility, leading on scene fire Captains to make the decision to evacuate all occupants safely from the building and notify KYEM officials.

Hazard officials advised the property managers that it was in the best interest of the students and faculty’s safety for them to not reenter the building due to the large buildup of gas inside the facility. The building was then secured, opened up, and fans were put in place to ventilate the remaining gas out of the structure. At which point faculty members decided to dismiss for the remainder of the day. The scene was then turned back over to the property managers.
