On this Labor Day, I’m proud to announce that our campaign has earned the endorsement of the Building and Construction Trades Council of Alameda County and its affiliated unions, including BAC Local 3, North Coast States Regional Council of Carpenters, Elevator Constructors Local 8, Iron Workers Local 378, Laborers Local 304 (LiUNA!), Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 342, Sheet Metal Workers Local 104, and Plasterers and Cement Masons Local 300. This endorsement is especially meaningful on Labor Day because Hayward has always been a working city, built by generations of skilled tradespeople and working families. In 2016, Hayward became one of the first cities in Alameda County to adopt a Project Labor Agreement for public construction projects. I supported that agreement because I made a promise to Hayward families: when we invest public dollars in our city, we should also invest in local workers, good union jobs, apprenticeship opportunities, and careers that allow people to support their families and build a future here at home. The building trades literally help build Hayward, and their work can be seen throughout our city. Thank you to the Building Trades and every affiliated union for your endorsement, your partnership, and your vote of confidence. On Labor Day, I am especially proud to stand with the working men and women who build our city and strengthen our community every day.

We’re a city built by generations of families who work hard, support their families, and contribute to the strength of our city. Hayward workers have helped build the businesses, schools, public agencies, neighborhoods, and institutions that make us what we are today. From the private sector to public service, from small businesses to major industries, and across every profession and trade, our families have helped Hayward grow and thrive. This Labor Day, we honor everyone whose work keeps our city moving forward. We celebrate the generations who came before us, the workers contributing today, and the families who continue to build a stronger future for Hayward. Thank you for everything you do. 🏈 Friday Night Lights at Hayward High 🏈 I spent tonight with Hayward High School Principal Krystal Thomas, Assistant Principal Andrea Gill, and HUSD Administrator Greg Fobbs cheering on HHS Football. It’s always special to return to my alma mater and support our students. Hayward High played an important role in my life, and I’m always proud to come back and show some Farmer pride. Great to see students, families, educators, and alumni filling the stands and supporting our team. Go Farmers! 🖤💛🏈🏈

Great news for Alameda County and Hayward! As a member of the Alameda County Mayors’ Conference (ACMC) and a member of the ACMC Housing and Homelessness Task Force, I’m pleased to share that the draft Home Together Plan 2030 is now open for public review and comment. All 14 Mayors in Alameda County are working together, alongside our County partners, to build a coordinated regional approach to homelessness. While every city has different needs, we know this challenge does not stop at city borders. It requires all of us working together. The plan is built around five important pillars: prevention, access, health care, shelter, and housing. Our goal is to make sure these priorities are firmly established across Alameda County so cities and the County can better coordinate services, use resources effectively, and help people move toward stable housing. This kind of regional collaboration matters. When all 14 Mayors and Alameda County work from a shared framework, we can strengthen what is working, identify gaps, and provide better support for people and families who need it. I encourage everyone to review the draft Home Together Plan 2030 and share your feedback. Public input is an important part of this process, and your experiences and ideas will help shape the final plan. Working together city by city and neighborhood by neighborhood we can build a stronger and more coordinated response to homelessness throughout Alameda County. One of the things I value most about serving as Mayor is simply standing at a neighbor’s doorstep and having a conversation. No podium. No microphone. No formal meeting. Just neighbors talking about their families, their streets, their concerns, and what they want for Hayward. I learn a lot from these conversations. I get to listen, answer questions directly, and hear firsthand what people are experiencing in our neighborhoods. To me, that is community engagement at its best. Thank you to everyone who has opened their door and taken a few minutes to talk with me. I appreciate your stories, your questions, your honesty, and your ideas. Being Mayor means being present, listening, and never forgetting who you work for. Great cities start with strong neighborhoods.

I cannot believe I am writing these words about my friend Linda Renteria. Linda passed away unexpectedly last week, and I have spent the past several days thinking about her life, her generosity, and the tremendous difference she made in Hayward and throughout the East Bay.

Linda was the CEO of Casa Sanchez Foods in Hayward, an engineer, a respected business leader, and someone who gave generously of her time and expertise by serving on business and academic boards throughout our region. But when I think about Linda, I especially think about her commitment to students and education.

From K–12 classrooms to community colleges, universities, and graduate programs, students benefited from Linda’s belief that education creates opportunity. She and her family quietly and generously supported educational organizations, community programs, scholarships, and opportunities that helped young people pursue college and professional careers.

I was fortunate to work closely with Linda through the Friends of Chabot College Foundation. I saw firsthand how much she cared about students and their futures. Her family gave generously to the Foundation, and today there are students pursuing their education who are directly benefiting from that generosity.

What I respected most about Linda was that she never needed recognition for doing good. She did not seek awards, accolades, or attention. She simply showed up, shared her expertise, supported good work, and helped people. That was Linda.

In public life, we often talk about investing in the next generation. Linda actually did it. She invested in students, believed in their potential, and helped create opportunities that will continue long after all of us are gone.

This is a tremendous loss for Hayward and for the philanthropic and educational communities throughout the East Bay. I will miss working with Linda, but I will always be grateful for her friendship, her generosity, and her belief in our students.

God bless you, Linda. Thank you for believing in Hayward. Thank you for believing in our students. And thank you for quietly making our community a better place.

You will be deeply missed.

I grew up listening to country music and Dolly Parton was always part of our family’s musical rotation. I remember the holiday specials and my mom shushing all the kids whenever a Dolly song came on the radio. Her music was simply part of growing up. The world will miss Dolly Parton for her extraordinary music and generosity. But her legacy reaches far beyond the stage. Through her Imagination Library, she helped connect millions of children to books and encouraged families to read together. Thank you, Dolly Parton, for the music, the memories, and for making sure generations of children grew up with books in their hands. What an incredible legacy. RIP 📻🎙️📚🎶

Closing the National Archives will make it even more difficult for communities of color and families of color to collect their histories and research the origins of their families. I hope the congressional delegation for this area are successful and stop the move to close this very important institution.
