Our boundaries enc

ompass a 64 square-mile area, which includes the cities of Hayward, Castro Valley and San Lorenzo, as well as the major unincorporated areas of Ashland, Cherryland, and Fairview. In 1944, representatives of the City of Hayward, various school districts, and local civic organizations developed a proposal for establishment of the Hayward Area Recreation and Parkway District. When an initiative was placed on the November 7th ballot, the residents voted overwhelmingly for the creation of the District, which was officially formed on December 11, 1944. In 1958, the District changed its name to the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District, and has become the largest recreation district in the State of California. Since its creation, the District has provided residents with many beautiful facilities and parks, many of which have received national and state recognition for their design, innovation and beauty, as well as hundreds of educational and recreational classes and programs.

What’s cooler than the NBA Finals? 🏀
A local teen who helped transform his community.
Back in 4th grade, Gio wrote a letter asking for a 3-point line at Hillcrest Knolls Park. Years later, that persistence helped inspire a full court renovation.

Now he’s thriving at San Leandro High School, moving up to Varsity, and still putting up hundreds of shots every week on the very court he helped improve.

Thanks to community input, like Gio’s, and Measure F1 funds, more than 30 basketball courts have been renovated throughout the District.

A basketball court at Hill Crest Knolls Park in San Leandro is a dream five years in the making. It all started with a simple letter written by a fourth grader that has now become a reality. Velena Jones reports.
