Hayward POA (Police Officers' Association) is the governing body of the Hayward Police. We have proudly served the community of Hayward for many years.

The goal of the Hayward POA is to partner with the community and provide quality police service through community interaction, emphasizing the highest degree of cooperation, professionalism and ethical behavior, and to create an atmosphere of safety and sec

urity. Our community policing approach helps neighborhoods keep safe by working with our police officers daily. We are committed to not only the safety of our citizens and business but to providing charitable contributions to those in our community who need our help the most. Today is Memorial Day. Not a long weekend. Not a sale. A day set aside to remember the men and women who gave everything.

The roots of this holiday go back to May 1868, when General John A. Logan issued a proclamation designating May 30 as a day to decorate the graves of those who died in the Civil War. What began as flowers placed on graves eventually grew into a national observance honoring every American service member lost in every conflict this country has ever fought. More than 1.3 million Americans have died in military service throughout the nation's history.

Our members are working today, as they do on every holiday, keeping this community safe while families gather to remember. We do not take that lightly on any day, but especially not this one.

Today is Peace Officer Memorial Day, and our association is pausing to honor it the right way.

On October 1, 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed Public Law 87-726, officially designating May 15 as the day this nation recognizes law enforcement personnel killed or disabled in the line of duty. According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, an average of 150 to 160 law enforcement professionals are killed in the line of duty every year in the United States.

In observance of this day, we are running a fundraising drive. Financial stability for surviving families is not a bonus. It is a responsibility we take seriously.

Today is Children of Fallen Patriots Day, and it is one of the more sobering dates on the calendar.

May 13 was chosen for this observance because it marks the day Arlington National Cemetery was established in 1864. That connection is intentional. The Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation estimates that approximately 25,000 children have lost a parent in the line of military duty over the last 35 years. Without support, only 20 percent of those children complete college. With the foundation's assistance, that rate rises to 91 percent.

These are children who carried a loss most people their age could not begin to understand. Many members of this association are veterans. We do not take this day lightly.

This week is National Police Week, and it carries a weight that words do not always do justice to.

National Police Week 2026 runs from May 11 through May 17, with memorial ceremonies, honor guard tributes, and survivor events taking place across Washington D.C. This year marks the 38th Annual Candlelight Vigil, where the names of every law enforcement professional killed in the line of duty in the past year are read aloud, one by one, in front of the families and colleagues they left behind.

For our association, this week is personal.

The members we represent know what it takes to put on the uniform every day. They know the names of the ones who did not come home. They carry that with them on every shift, and they show up anyway, because that is the job.

Today is Mother's Day, and we want to take a moment to actually mean it.

Anna Jarvis, who campaigned for the holiday's creation, later spent years fighting to keep it from becoming too commercialized. By the 1920s she was publicly critical of the greeting card industry and even called for the holiday to be removed from the national calendar. She believed it was meant to be a personal, sincere expression, not a commercial event. It is a reminder that the original intent was simple: stop and recognize the people who give more than they are given credit for.

Our members working shifts today are serving this community while missing time with their own families. That sacrifice is worth acknowledging today just as much as everything else.

Today is Military Spouse Appreciation Day, and it is one that deserves a lot more than a social media post.

Military spouses hold things together in ways that rarely get acknowledged. President Ronald Reagan established this observance in 1984 through Proclamation 5184, making it an official national recognition of the sacrifices made by the spouses of military personnel. At the time of signing, Reagan called military spouses "the unsung heroes of the armed forces."

Several members of this association serve in the reserve components, and the spouses supporting them here at home are part of what makes that dual service possible. They do not wear a uniform, but they serve just the same.

Happy Cinco de Mayo to every family in our community celebrating today.

The date marks something worth knowing. On May 5, 1862, a Mexican army of roughly 4,000 soldiers defeated a French force of more than 6,000 at the Battle of Puebla under General Ignacio Zaragoza. The French army had not suffered a major battlefield defeat in nearly 50 years before that day. It became one of the most celebrated moments in Mexican military history and a symbol of resilience that carries forward to this day.

Our members are out on patrol making sure every celebration in this community stays safe so families can enjoy it the way it was meant to be enjoyed.

Happy 118th birthday to the United States Army Reserve.

What started on April 23, 1908 as a small Medical Reserve Corps of 160 doctors has grown into a federal force of approximately 172,000 trained soldiers who balance full civilian lives with full military readiness. That is not a backup plan. That is a deliberate, disciplined commitment to being ready when the country calls, without setting everything else aside to do it.

Several members of this association serve in the Army Reserve, bringing that same discipline and commitment directly into the work they do in this community every day. Two sets of responsibilities. One standard of service.

Earth Day is here, and we think it deserves more than a post about recycling.

When the first Earth Day was observed in 1970, it represented something bigger than a single date on the calendar. It was a public declaration that the land, the water, and the air belong to everyone, and that everyone shares responsibility for protecting them. That idea is just as relevant today as it was 56 years ago.

The professionals in this association enforce the regulations that back that idea up. Illegal dumping, wildlife protection, public land ordinances. It is not the most visible part of the job, but it matters every time someone gets to enjoy a clean park or a healthy waterway because of it.

Do something good for the outdoors today. It gives back more than most people realize.

This week is National Work Zone Awareness Week, and it is one worth paying attention to.

The people in orange vests doing road work alongside moving traffic are someone's parent, spouse, or child. They showed up to do a job, and they deserve to go home when it is done. According to the Federal Highway Administration, there were a total of 2,261 work zone crashes in 2025 alone. Nearly every one of those tragedies involved a decision a driver made behind the wheel.

Our members are stationed in these corridors this week and every week, enforcing speed limits and keeping both drivers and road crews safe. The ask is simple: slow down, stay back, and pay attention. The orange signs are not a suggestion.

Work zones are temporary. The consequences of ignoring them do not have to be.
