🇺🇸September 11, 2001- We Will Never Forget
25 years ago, our nation awoke to a morning that would forever change America.
Today, the Sawyer County Sheriff's Office pauses to remember the nearly 3,000 lives taken on September 11, 2001; and the courage, sacrifice, and selflessness shown by so many in the hours, days, months, and years that followed.
Throughout the day today, we pause and remember the timeline of events that occured on that day:
7:59-8:42 A.M.: American Airlines Flight 11, and 77 departed from their airports; United Airlines Flight 175 and 93 took off from theirs.
8:46 A.M: American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
9:03 A.M.: United Airlines Flight 175 struck the South Tower.
9:37 A.M.: American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia.
9:59 A.M.: the South Tower collapsed.
10:02 A.M.: United Airlines Flight 93 crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania after the crew and passengers fought back against the hijackers; preventing the aircraft from reaching the intended target.
10:28 A.M.: After burning for 102 minutes, the North Tower collapsed.
In the midst of unimaginable destruction, first responders did what they had sworn to do.
While thousands were desperately trying to escape the danger; firefighters, law enforcement officers, paramedics, EMTs, and other rescuers ran toward it. Many entered the towers knowing the risk, climbing stairwell after stairwell while helping others make their way down.
Many never came home.
And the sacrifice of September 11 did not end when the smoke cleared.
In the years and decades that followed, first responders, recovery workers, volunteers, and others exposed to the dust, debris, and toxic conditions at Ground Zero and other attack sites developed serious illnesses. Many more have since lost their lives as a result of that service.
Today we remember them all.
We remember those who went to work, boarded a plane, or reported for duty that morning and never returned home.
We remember the firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, military members, dispatchers, medical professionals, and ordinary citizens who answered the call when their country needed them.
And we remember those who carried the physical and emotional consequences of that day for the rest of their lives.
May we never forget the lives they lived, the courage they showed, the sacrifices they made, and the promise of a nation that will never forget. 🇺🇸
