Today, July 31st, 2024 Law enforcement officers across Wisconsin are participating in Speed Awareness Day – a 24-hour high-visibility enforcement and education campaign. Locally, the Town of Hayward Police Department, the Sawyer County Sheriff's Office, and the City of Hayward Police Department will be conducting heightened speed enforcement efforts.

Our mission is to ensure the safety of all road users through rigorous speed enforcement and education. This campaign is designed to focus specifically on the consequences of speeding while urging drivers to slow down.

Speeding is a serious threat to road safety, leading to preventable accidents and tragedies. Let's work together to uphold traffic laws and promote responsible driving habits. Drivers who are speeding have less time to react when traffic ahead stops or slows and crashes become more serious. Excessive speed is among the most common causes of traffic crashes. In 2023, there were 16,401 speed-related crashes in Wisconsin that resulted in 176 deaths and injured 6,641 people.

Speeders risk much more than a citation – they risk the safety of everyone on our highways. Please drive safe, thank you!
