The Holiday Season is fast approaching, and with it, comes new fraud and scams that can impact you. Here are a few tips to help prevent you becoming a victim. Stay safe and Happy Holidays from the Town of Hayward Police Department!

1. BRING PACKAGES INSIDE
Stealing delivered packages is more common during the holidays. Bring deliveries indoors to avoid theft or giving the impressions that you’re out of town.

2. DON’T OVERSHARE ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Are you leaving home for a holiday trip? Don’t post this information publicly; be aware of your social media privacy settings!

3. DON’T OPEN SUSPICIOUS EMAILS OR CLICK LINKS
There is an increase in phishing scams around the holidays. Remember, reputable businesses, financial institutions, the IRS, and credit card providers will never ask for personal information in an email or by calling you. Also, don’t believe all offers – Be wary of “too good to be true” ads, giveaways, and contests.

4. AVOID CHARITY SCAMS
The holidays are an important time to give to those in need, but be careful – Watch for spoofed phone numbers, copycat organization names, and fake websites. Don’t give credit card information over the phone if they call you, always contact the charity directly to donate.

5. GIFT CARDS
Be careful of phone calls, websites or social media sites that offer gift cards deals or request payment in gift cards.

6. USE GOOD PASSWORD PRACTICES
We know, it can be tempting to use the same easy password for multiple retailers. Use strong, unique passwords for your online accounts – Don’t use the same password on more than one site or the same passwords you use for your bank accounts.

7. TRAVELING? USE CAUTION ON PUBLIC WI-FI
Only connect to known WiFi networks – Beware of WiFi network names that have typos, extra characters, or no password protection. Airports are a known target!

8. SELLING SOMETHING? BE CAREFUL
Fraudsters pretend to purchase an item only to send a fake check and ask for a refund of the "accidental" overpayment; by the time the victim realizes the check is bad they’ve already sent the funds from their account.

The Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Police Department is requesting assistance from the public in locating a vehicle that fled from an accident.

Last night (10/21/2022), at approximately 5:22 PM, an LCO Police Officer was dispatched to a one vehicle accident at the intersection of Janesville Ave. and Birch St. in Northwoods Beach. Upon the officer's arrival on scene, it was learned that the accident was a hit and run involving two vehicles.

The vehicle that fled from the scene was described as a red van with heavy damage to the rear passenger side and tailgate. As a result of the crash, items from inside the red van had fallen out of the tailgate area and were scattered across the road. The driver was reported as an older male with long, brown hair and wearing glasses.

If you or someone you know was in the area around the time of this incident and/or have any information that would assist in locating this red van, please contact the Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Police Department during normal business hours, Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm at (715)634-8350.

The Town of Hayward Police Department, along with other law enforcement agencies across the nation, are participating in National Move Over Day. (Saturday, October 15th 2022)

Law enforcement agencies are reminding drivers to know their responsibility when approaching stopped emergency vehicles on the roadway.

Each year law enforcement officers, firefighters, medics, highway workers and tow truck operators are injured or killed in Wisconsin by drivers who fail to move over.

Chief Kosterman reminds drivers that Wisconsin law requires motorists to move over when approaching stopped emergency or maintenance vehicles.

Drivers who do not move over or slow down can face a fine of $263.50 and potential license suspension.

Buckle Up Phone Down

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s (WisDOT) Buckle Up Phone Down campaign asks everyone to show support for two simple measures: use a seat belt every time you get in the car and stay off your phone while driving.

Cell phone use is one of the biggest distractions while driving. Distracted driving was a factor in almost 9,000 crashes in 2020, including 31 deaths.

WisDOT reports 11% of drivers in Wisconsin did not buckle up in 2020. Unbuckled drivers and passengers made up 44% of all fatalities 2020.

People of all ages in Wisconsin can commit to saving lives by taking the pledge at wisconsindot.gov/BUPD. Participants are encouraged to share a thumbs up/thumbs down photo on social media using the hashtag then challenge friends, family and coworkers to do the same.

Sawyer County Jail
Sawyer County is seeking applicants for full-time jailer positions. These positions would work a wide variety of hours including rotating shifts, nights, weekend and holidays and perform a wide variety of duties connected with the operation of the jail. Position requirements include graduation from high school, or equivalent, knowledge of computers and windows operating systems. Applicant must have good verbal and written communication skills, the ability to multi-task and react quickly and effectively to stressful situations.

Responsibilities include ensuring inmate and department safety, maintain continuity between shifts, administer routine medical care and dispense medication, and other duties as assigned. Position requires a high degree of confidentiality.

Selection procedure will consist of an oral interview, written test, background check, psychological evaluation, pre-employment physical and drug screening.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, have a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License, and have no felony or domestic abuse related convictions. Chosen candidates must be willing to obtain the Wisconsin State Jailer Certification sponsored by the employer. Law enforcement officer certification is not required. Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe Schools are back in session and Hayward Schools will be back in session before we know it. As students return to school, school bus traffic will be returning to our area roads.

The law throughout Wisconsin states that vehicles approaching a school bus displaying flashing red warning lights from the rear, or opposing lanes, must stop no closer than 20 feet from a stopped bus.

Please be vigilant as these school buses are carrying precious cargo.

A vehicle owner can be cited when the driver of a car passes a school bus illegally. A law enforcement officer need not witness this violation if the school bus driver reports it to the law enforcement agency within 24 hours. Fines can be quite high for illegally passing a school bus, but the risk of hitting a child is even higher.

The Town of Hayward Police Department would rather educate the public than have a tragic incident or have to issue citations for these types of violations. Stay safe!
