🚔⛈️ Deputies were storm spotting during Wednesday evening as thunderstorms kept rolling into the county. Lt. Alexander came across hail covering County Road 446 a few miles south of the Codington/Hamlin County line. Later in the evening, with several inches of rain in a short period, secondary roads in parts of Hamlin County became flooded as ditch culverts were overwhelmed. Hamlin County Emergency Management and Hamlin County Highway Department were out checking roads and posting signs on Wednesday night.

⚠️ Travel is not advised tonight on secondary roads as it is hard to see flooded or washed-out roads.

During Wednesday evening, a sheriff's deputy on US Highway 81 near 185th Street stopped a juvenile driver for traveling over 100mph.

Did you know that to stop a car traveling at 100mph, it takes an average of 600 to 720 feet under ideal, dry conditions. This is approximately the length of two football fields. The thinking distance is about 147–220 feet, which is the distance covered from the moment you see a hazard to the moment you hit the brakes. At 100mph, you are moving at 146.7 feet per second. A typical driver's reaction time of 1 to 1.5 seconds means you will travel over 200 feet before your foot even touches the pedal. Then you have the braking distance, which is about 400–500 feet. This significantly increases the risk of a severe or fatal crash for everyone on the highway.
