The members of the Hawthorne Fire Department invite all residents, neighbors, and family to our annual 9/11 Ceremony on Thursday, September 10 at 6 p.m.

This year marks 25 years since September 11, 2001. We will honor the lives lost that day and remember our own, Firefighter Michael J. Lyons.

Hawthorne Fire Department Training: Mastering Primary Search Tactics 🏠🚒

Our dedicated members put in the work this month, training on critical primary search tactics — the essential skills needed to rapidly locate and rescue occupants during a structure fire.

With masks completely blacked out to simulate zero-visibility, smoke-filled conditions, our crews navigated a purpose-built maze featuring a simulated hallway, bedroom, and closet. They practiced systematic search patterns, maintaining orientation, and safely removing a rescue dummy under realistic stress.

Primary search is one of the most important — and challenging — operations we perform. These hands-on sessions ensure our members are sharp, confident, and ready to bring everyone home safely.

Great job by all members. Training like this keeps our skills sharp and our community protected.

Hawthorne FD & Sleepy Hollow FD Mutual Aid Response

Early this morning, Hawthorne FD and Sleepy Hollow FD Sleepy Hollow Fire Department units were relocated to assist Briarcliff Manor FD with a structure fire.

Our members worked efficiently alongside neighboring departments to bring the incident under control. Great job by all firefighters involved!
Incidents like this remind us how critical mutual aid is in our area — when one department needs help, we all answer the call.

🚫 CAN’T PARK THERE! 🛹

The Hawthorne Fire Department responded to a single-vehicle rollover. When our crew arrived, the driver had already self-extricated from the SUV... after it decided to take an unscheduled trip down the embankment.

From the looks of it, the vehicle tried to ride the guardrail like a skateboard — lining up for the perfect ollie kickflip.

The landing? Not so awesome.

Thankfully, no one was seriously injured — just a bruised ego and a vehicle that’s definitely not street-legal anymore. 😂

But seriously folks… keep your eyes on the road. Taking them off for just 4.6 to 5 seconds is the same as driving the length of a football field at 55 mph with your eyes closed.

Don’t turn your daily commute into an X Games audition. Drive safe!

Vehicle Extrication on Bradhurst Ave

Early Sunday morning (approx. 4:00 AM), our members responded to a serious single-vehicle motor vehicle accident on Bradhurst Avenue. The vehicle had struck two utility poles and two trees, leaving the car heavily mangled.

Our crew arrived on scene, quickly deployed extrication tools, and performed a roof removal to safely access and remove the trapped driver. The occupant was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Incidents like this are exactly why Hawthorne Fire Department conducts rigorous extrication training multiple times per year. Frequent MVAs in our district demand that we remain sharp and efficient — always focused on rapid patient access and the “Golden Hour” to give every victim the best possible chance.

Our members demonstrated strong skill, teamwork, and professionalism under challenging conditions. Great work all around.

Fire Department Pump Ops Training

This past weekend, our dedicated members took part in an intensive Pump Operations class led by All Hands Fire. The training provided valuable hands-on experience that sharpened our skills in one of the most critical areas of firefighting.

Our crews focused on mastering pump hydraulics, learning to quickly calculate and set accurate discharge pressures using practical “street math” techniques. They then verified those settings with precision tools like flow meters and pitot gauges. The team successfully flowed multiple hand lines simultaneously while also operating master streams, building confidence in delivering the right volume and pressure under real-world conditions.

Training like this directly strengthens our operational readiness and ensures we can perform at the highest level when the community needs us most.

A big thank you to All Hands Fire for delivering such a practical and effective program, and to all our members who showed up ready to learn and push themselves.

Aerial Operations Training on Tower Ladder -12

Hawthorne Fire Department crews are continuing their aerial operations training on the new Tower Ladder - 12.

Members practiced ladder deployment, positioning, and rescue techniques from the aerial platform.

This hands-on training with the new apparatus ensures our personnel are fully proficient with the department’s latest high-reach equipment for structure fires, technical rescues, and other elevated incidents.

Solid work by everyone involved in getting qualified on Tower Ladder - 12.

Mutual Aid Relocation

The Hawthorne Fire Department has relocated units to Valhalla Fire Department headquarters to provide immediate coverage while Valhalla FD is fully committed to a Hazmat incident involving a chlorine leak.

Car 2193 and Engine 155 are now in quarters at Valhalla, standing by for responses in the district.

Valhalla Fire Department , Westchester County Hazmat Team, along with supporting hazmat units, are on scene conducting air monitoring, evacuation, and mitigation efforts.

Chlorine is a toxic, corrosive gas. Full PPE and SCBA required. Avoid Westlake Dr & Columbus Av in Valhalla.

Stay safe out there, and thanks to all members working the incident.
