Over the weekend, members of the Hawthorne Fire Department were dispatched to a single-car MVA at the southbound Bradhurst Avenue entrance ramp to the Sprain Brook Parkway.

Upon arrival, HFD was informed by agencies on scene that the driver was trapped inside the vehicle. Our members immediately went to work, starting with a driver’s side door peel. Once the side of the vehicle was removed, it was clear that additional steps were needed for safe extrication. HFD then cut the seat hinges to gain better access to the patient.

Working together with EMS personnel on scene, it was truly “all hands on deck” during patient removal. The driver was successfully extricated and transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and observation.

HFD regularly trains on a wide range of vehicle extrication techniques, and that preparation turned this incident into a smooth, well-coordinated, and efficiently executed operation.

Great job by all members involved!

Hawthorne and Valhalla Fire Departments teamed up for a productive joint master stream drill. The crews made the most of the session, focusing on high-volume water supply and coordinated aerial operations.

Tower Ladder 12 stretched its legs — or should we say its bucket — putting on an impressive display as it flowed powerful master streams. Firefighters practiced smooth handoffs between companies to deliver maximum water where it’s needed most.

These joint training exercises are incredibly valuable. They strengthen mutual aid partnerships, build confidence in working together on big incidents, and keep everyone sharp on the tactics that matter when seconds count.

Excellent work by all members who participated — professionalism and teamwork at its best!

Hawthorne Fire Department is having a Wet Down!

Join us Sunday, May 17, 12-2 PM - 25 Home St.

Come celebrate as we welcome three new additions to our fleet!

Tower Ladder 12 (E-One)
This powerful new tower ladder replaces our outgoing Ladder 56 and brings modern capabilities to the department. With an impressive 100-foot reach, TL-12 has already been put to work on multiple calls throughout the district. Our members have been putting in dedicated training hours to master its advanced features and ensure we're ready to protect our community from the tallest challenges.

Utility 97 (Polaris Side-by-Side)
Thanks to a New York State grant, we recently acquired this versatile Polaris Side-by-Side (the same grant also funded the new apron in front of our upper apparatus bay). Utility 97 significantly expands our response capabilities, allowing members to quickly access multiple calls on the County trails and in Graham Hills Park—areas that are tough to reach with traditional vehicles.

63-B2 (Ford F-450 Ambulance)
Our 2026 Ford F-450 ambulance is fully equipped for emergency medical service. It features a spacious patient compartment with advanced life-support equipment. Designed for comfort and rapid response, 63-B2 ensures our members can deliver high-quality care to those in need throughout the district.

Join us on May 17 from 12–2 PM to check out the new apparatus, tour the firehouse, and meet the dedicated members of the Hawthorne Fire Department.

We'll have food, entertainment, and plenty of fun for the whole family!

Hawthorne Fire Department Response – Multi-Vehicle MVA

This morning at approximately 4:45 a.m., members of the Hawthorne Fire Department were dispatched to a multi-vehicle motor vehicle accident with rollover, possible entrapment, and reports of fire on the Sprain Brook Parkway Southbound near the Grasslands Road exit (Route 100C).

Upon arrival, Hawthorne Fire Department, along with Valhalla Engine Company , found two vehicles involved: a pickup truck and a minivan. No fire was present. The occupants of the minivan had self-extricated. The pickup truck had rolled onto its side, trapping the driver.

Crews from both departments immediately began extrication using a roof peel. Additional members stretched a hose line and stabilized the vehicle. The driver was successfully removed in a swift and controlled operation and handed over to EMS for transport to the hospital for possible hip injury. All minivan occupants were also evaluated for injuries.

The southbound parkway was partially closed during the incident for safety. Once all patients were transported, all lanes were promptly reopened to accommodate morning rush-hour traffic.

This weekend, members of the Hawthorne Fire Department conducted an aerial operations drill utilizing Tower Ladder 12 (TL-12).

Firefighters trained on all aspects of operations, beginning with proper placement of the outriggers, followed by hands-on training at the turntable controls, and finishing with final adjustments in the bucket.

This was the first of many drills for the department’s newest apparatus. Continuous training is essential to maintaining operational readiness and ensuring the safety of both our firefighters and the community we serve.
