Hawthorn Woods Public Works employees are collecting food to feed our hungry neighbors. Collection boxes can be found at Village Hall and the Aquatic Center. We are accepting donations now until July 24.

Lake County is partnering with the American Public Works Association Lake Branch, the Northern Illinois Food Bank, and the Lake County Sheriff's Office for a county-wide food drive! All food donations will be delivered to the Lake County Fairgrounds, 1060 East Peterson Road, Grayslake, and culminating in a huge Touch-A-Truck event with all the participating agencies. Admission to the event is free, but you are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to participate in the food drive. Bring the kids to see all their favorite big trucks up close and personal!

This food drive will bring to light the vital role Public Works and Transportation employees play as first responders in emergency management. When crisis strikes or emergencies happen, our public works professionals are right there day or night helping respond alongside our police, fire, and medical professionals. In that spirit, help us respond to hunger in our communities by bringing a donation and coming to see some of our response equipment and meet some our public works professionals.

Stay cool and hydrated today and this weekend!

Extreme Heat often results in the highest number of annual deaths among all weather-related hazards. In extreme heat, evaporation is slowed and the body must work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature. This can lead to death by overworking the human body.

Remember that:
- Extreme heat can occur quickly and without warning.
- Older adults, children, and sick or overweight individuals are at greater risk from extreme heat.
- Humidity increases the feeling of heat as measured by a heat index.

If you are under an extreme heat warning:
- Find air conditioning.
- Avoid strenuous activities.
- Watch for heat illness.
- Wear light clothing.
- Check on family members and neighbors.
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Watch for heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.
- Never leave people or pets in a closed car.

An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect for northern Illinois and northwest Indiana today and Saturday. Much of Illinois as well as the Mississippi River Valley and Lower Great Lakes regions will see excessive heat.
