Reset, Prepare, and Relax
Box Breathing is a simple, physiologically based relaxation technique that helps calm the nervous system and improve focus. Controlled breathing techniques have existed for thousands of years and Box Breathing has been popularized in modern settings through its use by Navy SEALs and other high-performance professionals.
Box breathing can help you reach a state of calm and mental clarity. It can also be useful when preparing for sleep or before a stressful situation such as taking an exam, speaking in public, having a difficult conversation, or maintaining composure under pressure.
How to Practice Box Breathing
1. Inhale slowly through your nose for 4 seconds, allowing your abdomen to expand.
2. Hold your breath for 4 seconds.
3. Exhale slowly through your nose or mouth for 4 seconds.
4. Hold again for 4 seconds before beginning the next breath.
Repeat this cycle 4 times or until you begin to feel calmer.
Some people find it helpful to visualize the four sides of a square or box, moving from one corner to the next as they breathe.
