Ten years ago, a little girl named Isabella had a big idea: what if every kid in her neighborhood could have access to free books, no matter what?
That idea became Havre de Grace Little Free Library #41319, Harford County's very first Little Free Library built by a resident. For a decade, Isabella has lovingly restocked it, making sure it stayed full of stories for the kids who walk by. As a Hispanic military child herself, she always made it a priority to fill those shelves with books that every child could see themselves in.
This past Saturday, June 13th, we celebrated 10 years with a beautiful community event at Tydings Park, made possible with the support of UProoted Chesapeake and the Imagination Library of Harford County. Kids (and grown-ups too!) took home free books, listened to stories read aloud in English, Spanish, and Arabic, and stuck around for crafts and fun. We also hosted a raffle for a $25 Barnes & Noble gift card!
A huge thank you to Mel Frasqueri Santiago (UProoted Chesapeake), Melanie Feather and Josie Cosgrove (Harford County Imagination Library), and Retaj Haj Abdullah for taking the time to read to our attendees, hearing those stories in three languages was such a special reminder that no matter where we come from, a good story speaks to all of us. It truly was the perfect way to bring together people from different backgrounds and cultures, united by something as simple — and powerful — as a love of reading.
A special shoutout to Giabella, who read a story to the group like an absolute pro. Keep going, girl — you're a natural!
Thank you also to Rebecca Kross and the City of Havre de Grace, the Department of Public Works, and every family who came out to spend the day with us.
Community really is everything. Days like this remind us that reading and literacy have a way of bringing people together that nothing else quite does. To everyone who has supported this Little Free Library over the past 10 years — thank you. Here's to the next 10!
