Lady Warren is one of five fire companies that make up the Haverstraw Fire Dept. "The Green Book"
Lady Warren Hose Company #5 was organized in 1869, allegedly as a result of the sentiment "Irish Need Not Apply," which still existed in the Village of Haverstraw at that time. Irish immigrants and sons sensed these feelings, but were eager to serve their neighbors and all residents. Many of these ori
ginal members were tough and rugged brickyard workers. Not having an Engine House of their own for several years, they finally overcame much resentment and proved themselves. Being accepted came with the unexpected support from certain individuals with other political and religious persuasions. Over the years many Irish names continued to appear on the membership roll, including some of the hardworking and devout priests of St. Peters Church. On occasions the company would innocently or purposely get in trouble with Village Administration by being such an independent and sometimes obstinate sort, but they were always firm in their faith and convictions. To this end the company was often referred to as the "Green Book" or "Insurrection Hall." Many times retribution was taken against them - whether deserving or not. Often competitive and sometimes controversial, no one has ever questioned the fire fighting skills of Lady Warren or their cooperative efforts with other fire fighters during times of emergency. In fact, other local fire companies have sided with No. 5's numerous times with regard to Village and Fire Department issues. Although the ethnic background of the members has changed in recent years, many of the fine old traditions are continued with the same spirit and dedication, even wearing the "green" fire helmets. They have come to earn the respect and admiration of other fire companies and village residents for many years. Lady Warren has provided the Haverstraw Fire Department with many outstanding Fire Chiefs of Irish roots including Patrick Barrett, Thomas Clark, Mike McCabe, Bernie Fox, Peter Reilly, Jack Feeney, Vincent Welsh, Frank Sullivan, Vincent Ryan, Robert Sullivan Gene Hawkesworth and Al Lynch. Today old No. 5's responds to fires with great pride in the Village owned "Kelly Green" fire engine, adorned with gold leaf harps and a shamrock.
