🔥 **A Reminder “Sparked” by Recent Fires** 🔥

The Haverhill Fire Department has responded to at least two fires involving dryer lint in the past month. Fortunately, this common household hazard is also preventable.

After every load, remove the lint from your dryer’s lint screen. This simple habit improves airflow, helps your dryer operate safely and reduces the chance that accumulated lint will ignite.

Also remember to:

* Never operate your dryer when leaving home or going to bed.
* Keep the area around the dryer clean and free of combustible materials.
* Inspect the exhaust duct regularly for lint buildup or restricted airflow.
* Have the dryer and venting system professionally cleaned when needed.
* Make sure the outdoor exhaust vent opens freely while the dryer is running.

A few seconds of prevention after each load can help protect your home and family.

**Clean the lint screen after every use. Don’t let lint spark a fire.**

Please share this important safety reminder with your family, friends and neighbors.

🔋 Lithium-Ion Battery Safety

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day—from cellphones and laptops to e-bikes, power tools, and mobility devices. While these batteries are generally safe when used properly, damaged, defective, or improperly charged batteries can overheat and cause serious fires or explosions.

Help protect your family and your home:

• Always use the manufacturer-approved battery and charger.
• Charge devices on a hard, stable surface—not on a bed, couch, or other combustible material.
• Never leave charging devices unattended or plugged in after they are fully charged.
• Stop using a battery if it becomes unusually hot, swells, changes color, leaks, produces an unusual odor, or makes strange noises.
• Keep batteries and charging devices away from exits and escape routes.
• Never place lithium-ion batteries in household trash or recycling bins. Bring them to an approved battery-recycling location.

If a battery begins smoking, sparking, or burning, leave the area immediately and call 911. Do not attempt to handle the battery.

Understanding lithium-ion battery safety can prevent fires, protect lives, and keep our community safe. Please review and share these important safety materials, provided in both English and Spanish.
