Hofstra's American Association of University Professors (AUUP) faculty are currently in a struggle with university administration for a fair contract. They have asked for support in the form of sign ons to the attached community support letter, which gives some examples of how university administration has disrespected its faculty.

Higher learning institutions have been one of many under assault by the current administration. Hofstra's Center for the Study of Labor and Democracy, and its Labor Studies program, has been an amazing partner of LIJWJ for multiple campaigns over the years. They remain a steadfast voice for Long Island's workers, creating a platform for the workers' movement and conducting research on our region's labor conditions. Please support the Labor Studies and rest of Hofstra's AUUP faculty by signing on to the letter!

To sign on to the letter, simply message us saying you'd like your name added and the organization or congregation you represent, if applicable.

Working so closely with Long Island's faith communities, LIJWJ gets to know many amazing organizations and individuals. We hope you'll join us to honor one of them who has been front and center resisting authoritarianism and standing up for justice - Bend the Arc!

"Founded in 2012, Bend the Arc is a multiracial, multiethnic, intergenerational movement of Jews, organizing for a just and equitable United States where all people — within and beyond our Jewish community — are free and thriving. Bend the Arc has been the only national Jewish organization focused exclusively on progressive social change in the United States. Jews across the country must be part of the 3.5% of sustained resistance that we need to defeat authoritarianism. We grow the Jewish resistance through mass mobilizations, political education, and organizing arm-in-arm with our partners.

Our Long Island chapter was formed in 2016 and works in coalition with partners to pass legislation for immigrant justice, parole justice and more. We work on political campaigns, partnering with candidates and organizations to get out the vote, to elect candidates who share our values and to call out bad actors and hold them accountable. We lobby Federal and state legislators, participating in days of action, running political education workshops and much, much more!"

Please join us for an energizing, movement-strengthening, and worker-centered evening on Tuesday July 14th at Captain Bill's in Bay Shore! Reserve your tickets here - https://givebutter.com/2025-lijwj-awards-dinner-copy-r7uibi

You're invited to join LIJWJ and scores of others to celebrate and support Long Islanders organizing for justice! To undo and repair all the wrongs imposed on the working people of our region, we need a coalition of labor, faith, and community acting as one. In this spirit we hope you'll join us to honor DC9 IUPAT, Mary Dewar, Bend the Arc, and the Long Island Immigration Alliance who have all made important contributions to our local workers' movement.

We're proud to share our first 2026 Awards Dinner honoree spotlight! We'll start with District Council 9 International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (DC9 IUPAT)!

"District Council 9 is a chapter of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, an organization of painters, decorators, wall coverers, drywall finishers, sign painters, metal polishers, bridge & structural steel painters, civil service painters, lead abatement workers, glaziers & architectural metal glassworkers, paint makers and allied trades represented by over 11,000 members throughout New York State. The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades is dedicated to securing and improving wages, benefits, and overall working conditions for its members.

For more information on DC 9’s continuing efforts to provide pathways to the middle class for New York’s residents visit www.districtcouncil9.net or on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram."

On Long Island DC9 has been a strong voice for ending corruption and exploitation in the Long Island school construction industry. They were very influential in our most recent Workers' Rights Board on this issue, and you can read about how to join them in the fight for accountability in our Workers' Rights Board hearing report on our website.

Our 2026 Awards Dinner is less than a month away! We hope you'll join us to honor DC9 IUPAT, Mary Dewar, Bend the Arc, and the Long Island Immigration Alliance. If you can't make it but would still like to support please leave a donation!

"Nurses at Catholic Health/ St. Charles, St. Joseph and St. Catherine of Siena hospitals are united for safe, quality care for our communities. We have deep roots in our Long Island communities. Many nurses were born in the hospitals where we work, had our children here, bring our loved ones here for care, and care for patients over the course of their entire lives.

Right now, we are fighting for fair union contracts that include safe staffing, as well as protections from workplace violence and fair wages. We are fighting for conditions to protect nurses and our patients and ensure there are always enough nurses to care for our communities.

We are a community that advocates for and supports each other, our hospitals, and our patients. Please show your support by signing our petition urging hospital administrators to protect care at Catholic Health and deliver fair contracts!"
