🚔 DWI GRANT UPDATE 🚔

Officers have worked three days of DWI grant enforcement so far, and the results are concerning.

Within the first two hours of each grant shift, officers have made a DWI arrest.

Three shifts. Three DWI arrests.

One driver from Haughton and two drivers from Doyline have been arrested for DWI.

The purpose of this enforcement is not to see how many arrests can be made. It is to prevent an impaired driver from injuring or killing themselves or someone else.

A first-offense DWI conviction in Louisiana can result in:

• A fine of $300 to $1,000
• Ten days to six months in jail
• A one-year driver’s license suspension
• At least 48 hours in jail or 32 hours of court-approved community service as a condition of probation
• Court-approved substance abuse and driver improvement programs
• Ignition interlock requirements and additional expenses

Those penalties do not include court costs, attorney fees, towing expenses, increased insurance premiums, missed work, or the lifelong consequences of injuring or killing someone.

Make your plan before you take the first drink. Once you are impaired, it may already be too late to make a good decision.

Call a friend, designate a sober driver, or use a rideshare service. The cost of a ride home is nothing compared to the cost of a DWI.

Officers will continue conducting DWI grant enforcement. If you drink, do not drive.

This increased enforcement is made possible through grant funding provided by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.

🚔 DRIVE SOBER OR GET PULLED OVER 🚔

The Haughton Police Department is joining law enforcement agencies nationwide for the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, which runs from August 19 through September 7, 2026.

Our goal is simple: deter impaired driving, prevent crashes, and make sure everyone gets home safely during the Labor Day holiday weekend.

During the 2024 Labor Day holiday period:

• 505 people were killed in traffic crashes nationwide.
• 170 of those deaths involved a drunk driver.
• Among drivers ages 18 to 34 who were killed, 40% had a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher.

“Labor Day weekend should be a time for celebration, not a time when a preventable decision changes lives forever,” said Haughton Police Chief Todd Gibson. “If alcohol is part of your plans, arrange a sober ride before the first drink. Our officers will be actively looking for impaired drivers, and anyone who chooses to drive drunk should expect to be stopped. Plan ahead, protect one another, and help us make sure everyone gets home safely.”

If your Labor Day plans include alcohol:

✅ Choose a designated sober driver.
✅ Use a taxi or rideshare service.
✅ Give your keys to someone sober if you are unable to drive.
✅ Stop friends from driving impaired and help them find a safe ride.
✅ Report suspected impaired drivers to law enforcement.

Drunk driving is illegal, dangerous, and entirely preventable. Make the responsible choice: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

The Haughton Police Department joins Bossier Parish Fire District #1 and our first-responder community in mourning the line-of-duty death of Fire Chief Robert W. Roe.

Chief Roe dedicated 37 years of his life to serving the citizens of Bossier Parish. His leadership and commitment to service will not be forgotten.

We extend our deepest condolences to Chief Roe’s family, friends, and fellow firefighters. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Rest easy, Chief Roe.

🛑 DO YOU KNOW LOUISIANA’S SCHOOL BUS STOP LAW? 🛑

Do you know the penalties for failing to stop for a school bus that is receiving or discharging students? Do you know the legal minimum stopping distance?

On August 19, officers were monitoring school bus stops when they observed a vehicle stop within only a few feet of a school bus that was actively unloading students.

Louisiana law requires drivers approaching a stopped school bus with its visual signals activated to stop no less than 30 feet from the bus. Drivers must remain stopped until the bus resumes motion or its visual signals are no longer activated.

Drivers approaching from either direction must stop unless the school bus is on a separate roadway divided by a physical barrier or intervening space. A roadway with only a center two-way left-turn lane is not considered a divided highway. Traffic traveling in both directions must stop.

A violation that does not result in injury carries the following potential penalties:

• A fine of up to $500
• Up to six months in jail
• Or both
• Mandatory driver’s license suspension

The license suspension is 30 days for a first conviction, 60 days for a second conviction, and one year for a third conviction.

Thirty feet is the legal minimum. Not three feet, not ten feet, and not immediately behind the bus.

School buses carry our community’s children. Give them plenty of room, remain alert, and never attempt to pass while the bus’s visual signals are activated.

🚨 Parents, Please Talk to Your Teen Drivers! 🚨

Traffic tickets are costly, and insurance is already expensive… especially when you have a teenager on your policy!

While our motor officers were working school zones and monitoring bus stops, their attention was drawn to excessive speeding on Allen Town Road. Within a 15-minute window after Haughton High School dismissed, motor officers stopped more than seven vehicles for speeding. Nearly every vehicle stopped was traveling over 40 mph, with one student driver traveling 50 mph in a posted 25 mph zone—twice the speed limit.

Several parents received phone calls asking them to speak with their children about speeding and careless driving.

Please take a few minutes to discuss safe and responsible driving habits with your teen drivers. Slow down, stay alert, and obey the posted speed limit.

Tickets are expensive, but the consequences of a serious crash can be far greater. We want safe roads for everyone!

🏍️ Today’s lesson: A softball helmet is not a motorcycle helmet.

Haughton Police Department’s motor officers joined our regularly scheduled patrol officers today to assist with school-zone enforcement.

While working traffic, officers observed a motorcycle traveling without a license plate. The operator, a Shreveport man, was not wearing eye protection and had apparently substituted a softball helmet for a DOT-approved motorcycle helmet. While we appreciate creativity, the bases were not loaded, and neither was the motorcycle’s paperwork.

During the traffic stop, officers learned that the operator:

• Had a suspended driver’s license
• Could not provide registration or proof of insurance
• Admitted knowing the motorcycle did not have a license plate

After realizing the stop was not going particularly well, the operator explained that he had borrowed the motorcycle from “a friend of a friend.”

A quick check of the VIN revealed that the motorcycle had been reported stolen.

Shocked? Neither were we.

The operator also informed officers that he was already out on two bonds following theft-related arrests in Shreveport.

The operator was subsequently arrested. Shreveport Police Department personnel attempted to contact the motorcycle’s registered owner but were unsuccessful. Because the owner could not be reached, the motorcycle was impounded for safekeeping.

Remember: Wear a DOT-approved helmet, carry the required documentation, and if your friend’s friend offers you a motorcycle with no license plate, no key, and exposed ignition wires… you may want to let that opportunity pass.

All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Today, HPD was the recipient of a $10,000 grant, funded by the CPKC (Canadian Pacific Kansas City).

Earlier this year, Officer Spinney with the CPKC Police Service contacted Chief Gibson about some potential funding for the PD. When the grant became available, Chief applied for the grant and today, we were presented with a check for $10,000 to help go towards the purchase of a new police car.

We are grateful to Officer Spinney and CPKC for recognizing our need and awarding us with the needed funds!!!

Chief Gibson would like to say a special thank you to Mr. Christian Mudd. Chief received some grant funding as well as state funding a few years ago to help purchase new Body cameras and Fleet cameras for all of our officers. Mr. Mudd helped purchase the equipment by donating funds, via his late grandmother’s foundation. He knows how critical keeping new equipment in the department is to help serve our community. Thank You, Mr. Mudd, we appreciate you and your family!!

UPDATE: as of 03:30, the roadway is back open!!

July 29th at 5:20 pm, The I-20 West bound on ramp is completely blocked due to an overturned 18 wheeler. This intersection will be closed for a lengthy period of time until the crash scene can be resolved. We will update this post once the roadway is cleared!!
