We aren’t really looking for anything now but still have to get leaves once or twice a day. Now that the seed pods are coming on, most of the plants are dying. Thankfully we have a lot of younger plants to supply leaves. I did find a 2-fer with a couple very small caterpillars right next to each other. They became 254 and 255.

We were lucky to see this one eclose while Karen’s mom was visiting. The other two from today came out earlier.

Here’s something new. I was showing someone our milkweed and found this one leaf with two eggs. After pulling off the leaf I noticed another small caterpillar on the same leaf. I think we checked six plants and found a total of four eggs and two caterpillars. So far we are having a bumper crop year.

Karen found the first egg yesterday on the first plant. She managed to find four more. We won’t start really checking until we get Nathan back to campus, though.

I put a ‘puddle’ in the pasture which is basically just a big tray with water and rocks where butterflies can get water and minerals.

I think I recently mentioned we hadn’t seen any Monarchs. Over the weekend and again today, though, we saw a number of them around our milkweed. It’s hard to know how many since they don’t stay still for long. We saw several different swallowtails as well.

The volunteer milkweed around the house is blooming and smells great alongside the lavender. We had a visitor but have yet to see a Monarch. The milkweed in the pasture is doing well but not quite as far along
