Please join Team Raven in congratulating Staff Sergeants Fisher and Lee on their promotion to Sergeant First Class! On 05 AUG, SFC Lee’s mother, Ginger, pinned his rank on his uniform. SFC Fisher’s wife, Amber, and daughter, Lillian, pinned his rank. SFC Fisher’s brother, Ray, was also in attendance. LTC Moretti then administered the oath of enlistment to reaffirm both NCOs’ commitment to service in an increased level of responsibility. Congratulations to SFC Fisher, SFC Lee, and their Families!

Building OC/T and Family Readiness-

On 15 JUL, the Raven Battalion conducted July’s Spearhead Day beginning with a team-building kickball competition. Team Allgood clinched a nail-biting victory over Team Fry with 18 runs to 4. Ravens then met for team-level discussion over breakfast to discuss topics related to Army culture and Holistic Health and Fitness. The teams will enjoy this weekend with their Families before picking up the pace during preparation and support to Pershing Strike ‘22, a post-wide mobilization readiness exercise, over the next few weeks.

Enhancing OC/T Readiness through Holistic Health and Fitness training -

On 07 JUL, the Raven Battalion hosted a Holistic Health and Fitness (H2F) leader professional development seminar for the officers and NCOs of the Spearhead Brigade. LTC Moretti opened with an introduction to the H2F program and its effect on military readiness. Dr Barnes, a Military Family Life Counselor, educated the brigade on sleep readiness while Mrs. Williams covered the mental aspect of readiness. Chaplain (MAJ) Sneed, the Spearhead Brigade Chaplain, spoke about spiritual readiness. Mrs. Breland of Hattiesburg Clinic’s Weight Management Division presented a class on nutrition and the services her team provides. SFC Green of Raven’s own Cougar Team presented an overview of H2F, its physical readiness dimension, and how the Raven Battalion applies its tenants to its OC/T’s individual H2F plans. Finally, Mrs. Gann, the Military OneSource representative from Mississippi State University, introduced the Spearhead Brigade to numerous local resources available to Soldiers and Family Members. Special thanks to MSG Figueroa and Cougar Team for working hard to make this seminar a success!

Taking Care of Soldiers and Families-

On 24JUN, the Raven Battalion conducted June’s Spearhead Day beginning with two special ceremonies. Ravens presented LTC Willig’s farewell gifts to thank him for his leadership as the 1-305th Infantry Battalion Commander over the past two years. Ravens then recognized SFC Morales’ achievements during this promotion to Master Sergeant. MSG Morales’ wife, Jacky pinned his new rank, and LTC Willig administered the oath of enlistment to reaffirm his continued service to the Army. Following the ceremonies, Soldiers competed in a team-building dodgeball competition where Team Figueroa dominated Team Moretti with 5 wins to 0. Ravens then met for team-level discussion over breakfast to discuss various topics related to “This Is My Squad” and Holistic Health and Fitness prior to departing for summer opportunity leave.

Building Partner Unit Readiness -

From 02-16 June, Diablo Team supported 1-98 CAV’s annual training as they participated in Operation THUNDER STRIKE at Camp Shelby, MS. THUNDER STRIKE served as the initial proof of concept for training in multi-domain operations at Camp Shelby, where cavalry units will integrate Electronic Warfare capabilities into their reconnaissance and security mission set. Diablo Team OC/Ts coached their partners toward employing their designated Electronic Warfare systems into their reconnaissance mission. The systems helped locate the enemy units by detecting and triangulating digital signals. B Troop. 1-98 CAV served as the primary training unit and conducted area and zone reconnaissance missions to gain and maintain contact with the opposing force.

Building Partner Unit Readiness -

From 03-16 June, the Raven Battalion deployed to Fort Chaffee, AR to support the 39th “Bowie Brigade” IBCT’s Annual Training 2022. Apache Team partnered with 2-153 IN “Gunslingers” while Cougar Team partnered with 1-153 IN “Warriors” and Diablo Team partnered with 1-138 IN “Task Force Grey”. Raven Headquarters OC/Ts supported command and staff elements from 39th IBCT and its subordinate battalions. Bowie Soldiers conducted individual and crew-served weapons qualification, vehicle crew gunnery qualification, mortar platoon certification, platoon situational training exercises including attack, ambush, and movement to contact, platoon live fire, and Raven UAS flight operations. SSG Schuster of Apache Team was recognized by the Bowie and Gunslinger leadership for his outstanding support to mortar certification which ultimately enabled the Gunslinger mortar platoon to conduct real-time fire missions in support of platoon live fire. Excellent work by SSG Schuster and the entire Raven Battalion!

Building Partner Unit Readiness -

From 04-15 June, Bulldog Team supported 1-279 IN’s Annual Training 2022 at Fort Riley, KS. Soldiers conducted individual and crew-served weapons qualification, vehicle crew gunnery qualification, squad situational training exercises including attack, ambush, and movement to contact, and squad live fire. Bulldog OC/Ts provided exceptional coaching and training which enhanced the already strong relationship with our partnered unit. Thank you SFC Stibbe, SSG Harris, SSG Lee, SSG Natanauan, and SSG Schrock for your hard work and commitment to the First Army mission!

Building OC/T and Family Readiness -

On 01JUN, Raven Soldiers and Families gathered at Hattiesburg’s Glory Bound Gyro Co. to farewell four of our teammates and their Families. Ravens first thanked SSG Collins for his service as an OC/T with Cougar Team as he assumes responsibilities as the 177th Armored Brigade Master Gunner. SSG Wayne was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for his service as a mortar OC/T with Bulldog Team in advance of his reassignment to Fort Carson, CO. MSG Griffin was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for his service as Diablo Team’s Senior OC/T and will attend the Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss, TX. Finally, MSG McNemar was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his service as Apache Team’s Senior OC/T. He will serve a Company First Sergeant at Fort Benning, GA.

On 24 MAY, The Raven Battalion recognized SFC Morales and SFC Shircel with the Order of Saint George (Bronze Medallion) for their extensive, faithful, and honorable service to the United States Army’s Armor and Cavalry Branches both with and prior to assignment to Team Raven. During the ceremony, LTC Willig formally inducted SFCs Morales and Shircel into the Honorable Order of St George as Distinguished Knights. We thank them for their high standards of integrity, moral character, professional competence, and dedication to duty. Congratulations and well done!

Building Partner Unit Readiness-

From 07-13MAY, SSG Schuster from Apache Team partnered with 1st Battalion, 635th Armored Regiment, 155th Armored Brigade Combat Team to conduct the Mortars Training and Evaluation Program (MORTEP) at Fort Riley, KS. Units conduct MORTEP annually to certify a mortar platoon to conduct live fire support for maneuver units on the ground. All member of the platoon passed a series of examinations including mechanical drills, computing a fire mission from a forward observer, and ultimately conducting a live-fire event during both day and night conditions. 1-635 AR successfully certified three 120mm mortar gun teams and the platoon fire direction center. Afterwards, the command team recognized SSG Schuster’s outstanding support with a battalion coin. Excellent job by SSG Schuster and Joker Platoon!
