Hattiesburg Police Department (Official) The Hattiesburg Police Department is currently led by Interim Police Chief Peggy Sealy.

The Chief works to guide the Department in its service to a 55 square mile area, annexed region. The Department consists of the Office of the Chief of Police, Operations, Direct Support, and Administrative Bureaus, and is authorized a staff of 140 sworn and 108 non-sworn personnel.

The Hattiesburg Police Department is investigating two separate shootings that occurred Monday, June 15, 2026.

At approximately 8:20 p.m., officers responded to the 600 block of Graymont Avenue, where a juvenile was struck by gunfire and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. A nearby residence and vehicle were also struck.

At approximately 10:05 p.m., officers responded to the 700 block of Myrtle Street, where four rounds struck the front of a residence. No injuries were reported.

The incidents are believed to be isolated and unrelated. Both remain under investigation.

TRAFFIC NOTICE | Tuesday, June 16 - 1:55 p.m.

A seven-vehicle crash has occurred on I-59 northbound at mile marker 62.

All northbound lanes are currently shut down.

Traffic is being diverted at Exit 60. Motorists are urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes if possible.

Emergency responders are on scene working the incident. Only minor injuries reported at this time.

Please use caution and expect significant delays.

Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

The Hattiesburg Police Department has arrested a man following a vehicle pursuit that began near a safety checkpoint.

On Thursday, June 11, 2026, officers with the Hattiesburg Police Department’s Special Operations Division conducted a safety checkpoint in the area of McInnis Loop and Broadway Drive.

At approximately 10:33 p.m., officers observed a vehicle begin to back up, turn around and drive away from the checkpoint. Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver, later identified as Quamane Cooper, 36, of Hattiesburg, fled the area.

During the pursuit, Cooper ran multiple stop signs and traffic signals before the vehicle left the roadway and overturned.

Cooper was booked into the Forrest County Regional Jail on two counts of possession of a controlled substance and one count of felony fleeing a law enforcement officer.

This remains an ongoing investigation.

The Hattiesburg Police Department Motor Unit recently attended the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers Association (MLEOA) 2026 Motor Competition and training event.

As part of the MLEOA Summer Conference, motor officers and deputies from across the South put their precision riding skills to the test. The event included precision cone courses, slow-ride competitions and tactical riding evaluations.

A big shout-out to the officers of the HPD Motor Unit for competing amongst the best departments in the state

Summer school is in session, and school zones will remain active at select campuses until June 25. Drivers should stay alert, slow down and obey all school zone traffic laws Monday through Thursday from 7:45 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.

School zones will remain active near:

▪️ Thames Elementary School, Jamestown Road

▪️ Woodley Elementary School, 21st Avenue and Hardy Street

▪️ Hattiesburg High School, Hutchinson Avenue

Members of the Hattiesburg Police Department’s Crime Scene Unit recently toured the new Paul H. “Bud” Holmes Criminal Justice Building at The University of Southern Mississippi.

Our officers explored the university's state-of-the-art forensic science labs and mock courtroom. It was a great opportunity to connect with faculty and students, discuss the latest trends in investigative technology and see firsthand how future law enforcement and forensic experts are being trained here in our community

Serving as a DUI Officer with the Hattiesburg Police Department since 2024, Officer Hocker has shown a strong commitment to impaired driving enforcement and public safety. His proactive efforts continue to help make the community’s roadways safer for residents and visitors alike.

A tree is down on South 28th Avenue near Jefferson Street, causing traffic disruptions in the area.

Please use caution if traveling nearby and consider an alternate route if possible.
