Today, A-shift is participating in extrication training, practicing the tools and techniques used to safely remove people from vehicles after serious crashes.

This type of training helps crews stay prepared for emergency calls that require coordination, precision and quick decision-making.

The same hands-on training shown today is part of what recruits begin learning through the Fire Academy, preparing them for the demands of fire response, medical emergencies, rescues and other critical calls across our city.

This career includes competitive pay, health insurance, retirement through PERS, professional development opportunities and tuition-free attendance at The University of Southern Mississippi or William Carey University.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen, have a high school diploma or GED, a valid driver’s license, no felony arrests and good moral character.

Join us in congratulating Jazmine Carter on being selected as the Hattiesburg Fire Department’s Firefighter of the Year.

She was surprised with the honor yesterday at Station 1, a moment made even more meaningful by the people behind it.

This award is voted on by her fellow firefighters, the ones who work alongside her every day and see the dedication, professionalism and heart she brings to the job.

Jazmine represents the very best of the Hattiesburg Fire Department, and we’re proud to recognize her for the impact she’s made on her fellow firefighters and the community she serves.

Congratulations, Jazmine, and thank you for all that you do.

The Hattiesburg area is under significant (Level 3) fire danger conditions on Saturday, March 28, with weather conditions allowing fires to start more easily and potentially spread, especially from late morning through the afternoon.

Open burning should not be attempted.

Secure trailer and tow chains to prevent sparks, and properly dispose of ci******es and smoking materials.

Even small sparks can quickly become dangerous. Please use caution and help reduce fire risk across our community.
