One hundred and sixty-one years ago, on June 19, 1865, federal orders were read and enforced in Galveston, Texas, marking the official end of slavery in the United States.

Today, we recognize Juneteenth as a time to commemorate freedom, reflect on our nation’s progress and acknowledge the work that remains.

Thanks to the Ray E. Foundation, the 43rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration is scheduled for today at Vernon Dahmer Park, with a fireworks show planned for 8:30 p.m., weather permitting.

WEATHER ALERT | Thursday, June 18, 2026

Good morning, Hattiesburg. The forecast has not changed much since yesterday, and the National Weather Service in Jackson continues to place our area under a significant flash flood threat (level 3 out of 4) through late tonight.

Widespread flash flooding remains likely, with 4 to 8 inches of rain possible and locally higher amounts. Street flooding could become an issue, and travel may become dangerous throughout the day and into tonight.

There is also a marginal risk (level 1 out of 5) for severe weather today. A few stronger storms could produce brief spin-up tornadoes, so please keep weather alerts turned on and have a way to receive warnings.

Sandbags are still available at Fire Station 1 (810 Main St).

Please avoid driving through flooded roads, even if the water looks shallow. Turn around, don’t drown. Use extra caution today, allow extra travel time and avoid low-lying streets or areas that commonly flood during heavy rain.

We will continue to monitor conditions and share updates as needed. Stay weather-aware today and take flooded roads seriously.

The first full week of summer activities is almost in the books, and it has been a good one so far.

We kicked off Popsicles in the Park with the
Hattiesburg Police Department and Summer Splash Days with the Hattiesburg Fire Department, bringing a little extra fun across the city.

The summer fun continues this Saturday with Summer of Movies at The Commons at Gordon's Creek. Join Hattiesburg Parks & Recreation at 8 p.m. for a free showing of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Bring a chair or blanket and enjoy a movie night under the stars.

There is plenty more planned all summer long. Find the full summer schedule at www.hburgsummer.com
