It's almost game time! Here are some tips for staying healthy and hydrated!

• Team members and coaches should hydrate two hours before each game or practice.
• Try to consume water every 20 minutes, if possible, during the game.
• After the game, rehydration will take several hours, replacing up to 150% of lost fluid.

Water and sports drinks
• Players should drink up to 3 liters a day.
• Sports drinks can replace electrolytes.
• Drink a combination of water and sports drinks during games/practice.
• Avoid sugary drinks and soda (pop).

Signs of dehydration:
• Headache
• Lightheadedness
• Thirst
• Irritability
• Nausea
• Muscle cramping
• Dark yellow urine
• Lack of focus
• Weakness
• Fatigue

The American Academy of Pediatrics has stated that energy drinks are not appropriate for children and adolescents, due to the high levels of caffeine and sugar. Children between the ages of 12 and 18 should not consume more than 100 milligrams of caffeine per day.
Caffeine levels in 12-ounce servings
• Soda: 23 to 83 milligrams (mg)
• Green tea: 37 mg
• Black tea: 71 mg
• Coffee: 113 to 247 mg
• Energy drinks: 41 to 246 mg
Large amounts of caffeine can cause the following health issues:
• Abnormal heartbeat (arrhythmia) (life-threatening)
• Aggressive behavior
• Dehydration
• Diarrhea
• Seizure
• Sleeping issues
Caffeine and stimulants can worsen anxiety, stress, aggression, depression and lack of sleep causing impaired moods and impulse control. Read labels and know what your kids are drinking.

Just a heads up: starting September 8, we will be making updates to our Emergency Department. During this time, some areas of the ED may be temporarily blocked off. Care delivery from our dedicated team will not be interrupted.

Thank you for your patience.

Happy Labor Day! It can be hard in our day and age, but make sure to slow down and make time for yourself.
