The Barry County Sheriff’s Office has unclaimed property obtained from vehicle and mailbox larcenies that occurred in October 2025 in Southwest Barry County, the Richland area, and Southeast Kent County. These items are difficult to describe with vague details, but owners should be able to provide more specifics. After one year, many of these items may be sent for destruction.

The Barry County Sheriff’s Office Victim Services Unit is seeking volunteers.

We are a group of civilian volunteers from different walks of life and various ages, primarily with little or no law enforcement background, who desire to assist individuals and families experiencing the trauma of a sudden, unexpected event.

We stay with the survivor until at least one additional person or family member is available to support them in their grief. We assist by making contact with other family, friends, and church members.

INFORMATION: The Barry County Sheriff’s Office is requesting the public’s assistance in locating a missing juvenile runaway. On July 29, 2026, Otto Arthur Mantz, 16, was last seen at his home just outside of Hastings, in Barry County. Otto is known to have friends in the Hastings area. He is five feet eleven inches tall, 165 lbs, with brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing no shirt, gray shorts, white Nike shoes, and a white Nike hat. Otto has a tattoo of an eagle on his back, and a tattoo on his right leg above the knee that reads “2010” with leaves under it.

TYPE OF INCIDENT: Two Vehicle Serious Injury Crash

DATE/TIME: Thursday, April 9, 2026 at 2:44 pm

LOCATION: S M-66 Hwy / Tasker Rd Hwy, Assyria Township

INFORMATION:

The Barry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a two-vehicle serious injury traffic crash, which occurred on S M-66 Hwy and Tasker Rd, in Assyria Twp.

The preliminary investigation revealed a Toyota Camry was driving northbound at a high rate of speed, and a GMC Acadia was traveling southbound. The GMC Acadia turned east onto Tasker Rd into the path of the Toyota Camry. The vehicles collided and multiple occupants were ejected from the Acadia.

One of the occupants of the GMC, a 19-year-old male from Coldwater, was airlifted to the hospital with life threatening injuries.

Three other occupants of the GMC were transported to the hospital for their injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
