Here at the Hook & Ladder Co. 1 while we still practice traditional methods of firefighting, just like the fire service itself technology is evolving. Ladder 22 is equipped with some of the most advanced firefighting equipment.

We recently took delivery of our newest piece of equipment, “the quick step roof anchor”. This anchor provides a safer and more efficient way that our firefighters can cut a hole in the roof by providing a safe platform to stand on.

As always the safety of our members comes first and this piece of equipment is also designed to catch you in the event you loose your footing and fall thanks to the Carabiner and rope that is rated to withstand 900° conditions.

On this day January 23rd 2005 known infamously as “black Sunday” the FDNY suffered the losses of 4 brave men who lost their lives at 2 separate incidents one in the Bronx and one in Brooklyn. The audio below is of the 3 alarm fire in the Bronx where LT. Curtis meyran, LT. John bellew and LT. Joseph dibernardo were quickly overcome by rapid spreading fire and were forced to jump from a 4th story window. As you listen to the bone chilling radio transmissions from this fire you can hear that there were many Obstacles that the members faced.

It was due to this fire in particular that the technology of fire departments nationwide advanced. Shortly after, fire departments nationwide were required to utilize a “bailout system” which consists of a harness, a hook, a descender to ensure a slow controlled decent and 50 feet of personal rescue rope only to be used by the firefighter in situations like this.

RIP
Lt. Curtis meyran- Battalion 26
Lt. John bellew- Ladder 27
Lt. Joseph dibernardo- Rescue 3
FF. Richard sclafani- Ladder 103 (Brooklyn)

On Sunday 12/22/2019 the hook and ladder co. 1 participated in the annual department “santa run” during the santa run we had an alarm at the foodtown grocery store for a water leak and all 4 Santa’s and their elf’s responded and took care of the water leak! Merry Christmas and happy new year from the members at Ladder 22! Have a safe and healthy one!

09/11/2019

Today the Hook & Ladder Co. 1 remembers those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The members of the numerous agency’s that responded were unaware that they were responding to their last alarm. FDNY box 8087 signal 5-5-5-5 was transmitted on that horrible day.
