The Hastings on Hudson PD has received increased reports of coyote activity within the village, including more sightings during the daytime.

This behavior during this time of year is perfectly normal, a time known as pupping season, when adult coyotes hunt around the clock to meet demands of nursing and feeding their offspring. This time also makes coyotes more protective, and may see off-leash dogs as threats.

Although it is normal, if the coyote seems to lack fear and actively approaches humans or aggressively stalks pets, seems disoriented, staggers, seems sickly, or has visible paralysis/injuries, it could be a cause for concern.

COEXISTING TIPS (ESPECIALLY DURING THIS TIME)
- leash your pets!
- Pick up small pets if you see a coyote while walking your pet
- If a coyote does approach, don’t run, but make yourself LOOK LARGE, wave your arms and make loud noises to reinforce their natural fear of humans

Please report any concerning coyote activity to the Hastings on Hudson PD at 914-478-2344

The Hastings-on-Hudson Police Department is committed to keeping our community safe through proactive crime prevention and strong partnerships with our residents.

As part of our Crime Prevention Program, we offer a Vacation Notification Program for residents who will be away from home for an extended period. By submitting a Vacation Notification Form before you leave, officers can be aware that your residence may be unoccupied and conduct periodic checks when possible during routine patrols.

Before heading out, remember to:
✅ Lock all doors and windows
✅ Put lights on timers
✅ Have a trusted neighbor collect mail and packages
✅ Arrange for lawn care or snow removal if needed
✅ Wait until you return home to post vacation photos on social media

The Vacation Notification Form is available on our website and is a simple way to help us work together to keep your property safe while you're away.

For more information and to access the form, visit our website.

Together, we can help keep Hastings-on-Hudson safe! 💙
