Strong majority of parents believe recent state laws banning books or making it illegal for teachers to talk about LGBTQ or racial issues are about politics, not what is in the best interest of children.

We believe Haslett’s School Board should share our community’s values:

1) That students should have the freedom to read and to learn – without efforts like book banning or covering up truths about our history, like the Holocaust or Civil Rights Movement.

2) That diversity is a strength that should be celebrated, not censored. The Haslett community and our schools should be welcome places for everyone, regardless of where they come from, who they love or how they worship.

3) That our schools must be safe from both disease and violence. Students can’t learn if they’re sick, so we need to rely on science to keep them healthy, in and out of school. And students can’t learn if they’re scared, so we have to proactively address bullying and keep guns out of our schools.

4) That we trust and respect our educators as the dedicated professionals they are. We trust Haslett’s teachers and support staff with our most precious commodity – our kids … we should act like it and honor them – not attack them.
