Mariam Avila is a 5th grade student at A. C. Alexander School who enjoys being at school with her friends and teachers because of the kindness and support she receives each day. Her favorite subject is math because she enjoys solving problems, working with numbers, and helping classmates who may struggle with certain concepts.

Outside of the classroom, Mariam enjoys playing soccer and staying active. She knows doing well in school is important because it can lead to a great future. Mariam describes herself as smart, athletic, and helpful, and she hopes to become an astronaut one day.

“Everyone here is very kind and always willing to help.” -Mariam Avila

7th grader students have been putting their science skills to work all year long! Students in Ms. Ismail’s classes recently showcased creative projects exploring photosynthesis and the carbon cycle through hands on models, diagrams, and presentations.

These projects highlighted critical thinking, creativity, and a deeper understanding of how science connects to the world around us. Great job, students!

For the past 12 years, Alphonse Collins has dedicated his career to supporting and inspiring students at West Jefferson High School. Teaching pre-calculus, honors math, and broadcasting, he enjoys helping students grow both academically and creatively.

Mr. Collins says the most rewarding part of teaching is seeing students achieve goals they once thought were out of reach. Whether helping students solve a difficult math problem or watching creativity come to life in broadcasting projects, he loves seeing students gain confidence and realize their potential.

Motivated by the students and inspired by his grandmother’s legacy in education, Mr. Collins hopes his students remember that he truly cared about them and always wanted to help them become the best versions of themselves.

“I enjoy seeing students become better versions of themselves.” -Alfonse Collins

L. W. Higgins High School recently welcomed alumni back to campus as part of a memorable Alumni Reunion Weekend, which concluded with a community picnic celebrating generations of Hurricane pride. 💙💛

The picnic brought together alumni from across the decades for a day of fellowship, laughter, and reconnecting with classmates and friends. From sharing stories and memories to enjoying time together, the event was a wonderful celebration of the Higgins community.

We love seeing our JP Schools alumni reconnect, strengthen friendships, and continue building community long after graduation.

Jefferson Parish Schools will request a waiver in order to remove the requirement for funds to be used for technology professional development and technology infrastructure, so that all Title IV funds can be spent on Safe and Healthy and Well-Rounded activities. We are able to request this waiver because these activities are already covered by other funding sources. JPS has a sustainable plan in place to replenish 1:1 chromebooks for students and technology professional development is already incorporated into existing training opportunities.
